Got caught with a run down battery last year running the ac and headlights while idling, waiting in line to leave the Frankenmuth Autofest in the dark. Tried to keep putting it in neutral and raising the rpm's to put more charge in the battery but at 9 years old it didn't have much reserve in it. Even after running down the road for 15 mins it was dead when I stopped for gas. Was suprised it cranked over after a long winters nap but a new alternator and battery was top on the list this year. Picked up a rebuilt one from Napa rated at 78 amps slated for a 1988 Dodge B250 van. Real happy with the results. My cheapo Harbor Freight voltmeter shows 15.29v and my old Sunpro meter was at about 14.75 at the battery, idling (700 rpm's) with the ac on, blower on low. Might be a little high but not sure if the old battery had a full charge in it. The only time it dropped below 13v was with the headlights on also. This is with the old battery still installed. Hope to pick up the new one soon. www.flickr.com/photos/182536383@N06/50114093062/in/dateposted-friend/www.flickr.com/photos/182536383@N06/50114092842/in/dateposted-friend/

I guess that's the specs for the alt speed... what would take to maybe 1050-1100 RPMs at engine for the low speed spec ( asumming it got the smaller pulley ). And maybe 42-46 amps at iddle.
Is amazing back in the 60s installed 35 amps or 45 amps still on A/C cars thinking that was enough! Now try to imagine drive it down the rain at night with wipers and lights on!

Yes I assumed that was alt speed. It does have a slightly smaller pulley so I'm about at the end of my belt adjustment now. My old one was indeed a square back but the date code was worn off so unknown. Since it's not original I'll probably return it for the core charge.

Excellent! If the old battery is too dead, you will be working that alternator really hard. Might be time for a new battery too. It's worth having it properly load tested to know for sure.

Oh yeah. New battery will be replaced on my next weekend off. It's 9 years old now. I'll throw it in my old Dakota whose battery won't stay up past a week and turn that one in for the core. Drove it to work today. Did not have to do the usual "neutral revving" to keep the voltage up which I had to do even with the ac off. Idling, ac on, foot on the brake, turn signal on and she stayed above 14v. So if this squareback was not original to my car I'll return it for the $15 core charge. Dated code is worn off probably from it being sandblasted during a rebuild. www.flickr.com/photos/182536383@N06/50117555016/in/dateposted-friend/

Dave, are you posting these pics? Remember I couldn't do it before and now they're appearing yet I'm not doing anything different. On the downside I now can't download pics from my email to my computer like I could before. Something changed in my computer probably during an update. I really dislike computers.

Please, get a parallel wire path from alt up to ammeter at least out of the bulkhead ( with a grommet through the firewall ). 10 gauge will be pretty much enough having the stock 12 still hooked up.
the path between amm and batt ( starter relay stud ) could be good too, but if with this alt your car barelly gets discharged, is not something to get worried a lot.

Already got a parallel 10 gauge bypass done.
