73 and 74 are different. I have a spare 73 in the garage. From the rag joint connector to the back of the wheel column connector is 31.5 inches give or take. Using this from the internet I refer to the back of the "shift housing" to the "double coupling" (rag joint circled). Hope that makes sense.

Sure got myself into a pickle . Got myself a rustfree 73 shell . The strg column is a 74 unit . One welded nut is farther away from center . The other 2 line up ok .How easy is it to remove the floor plate assembly or can I just drill a new hole for the 3rd hole and use a nut and bolt . And is there any other differences I am not aware of . I also have 3 different shafts going from rubber coupling to strg chuck . Must be an answer somewhere here .

Not sure why the diagram disappeared ... but unfortunately I can't answer that question. Steering and brakes I always refer the folks who know more than me.

I'm pretty much lost on the problems you are having but I just can say:
73 and 74 shafts and firewall plates are different. I guess the bottom bearing assembly also changes. 73 firewall plate is the same used on 71/72, while on 74 changed to the A body setup ( well, as far has been told around ). This makes the 73 a one year only assembly, and also makes the 74 firewall diff from earliers. Can't tell if 75/76 are same than 74s to say if 74 assembly is one year setup too.
Shaft lenght can change easily if the safety crash pins for the collapsible shaft are broken. Also if the "mesh" shell is some loosen or collapsed.
Pics of what you got would be helpfull I think

Pics of what you got would be helpful I think. And if you don't have a way to host them, let me know and I'll have you email them to me, and I'll host them for you.
