Yes, I have done both. The water more often than the trans fluid. You just have to keep the revs up, do it hot, and as he says...TRICKLE the water in. Dumping it in too fast WILL hydraulically lock the engine.
I'll also seen (but not personally done...never had the need) transmission fluid added to the engine oil. Drain a qt. of oil out, replace it with trans fluid. Idle or lightly drive. It will smoke heavily, but can help free up a sticking, ticking, noisy lifter.
My daughter has a '96 Saturn SL2. That little twin cam engine is a good one, but it's only design issue is the rings tend to stick at higher miles, and cause oil consumption. Unchecked, it will run the engine out of oil, leading to the demise of an otherwise good engine. While hers has never become a large consumer of oil, I also know she (like most of us) seldom checks it. So I've toyed with the idea of pulling the plugs, squirting some trans fluid into the cylinders, rotating the engine around to coat the rings, squirting it again, then letting it sit over night. I don't "know" that it will help dissolve any varnish on the rings, but I feel like it can't hurt. Trans fluid is a great solvent.

Seafoam in a lawnmower carb, yes. Seafoam in a car or trucks fuel tank, yes. Carb spray in the carb, yes. Can't say that I've ever done the water or trans fluid thing.

I too have never done the water or trans fluid tricks. Sounds promising.

I guess that could help on preginition due carbon deposits too...
on a side note, I can't imagine making that in Europe without the police coming home with a penalty fee LOL ( ATF at least )

It does get a little smokey. As does Seafoam. I guess the argument in favor is that the car will run better and be less polluting after the treatment.

I have done the trans fluid in an older car that had lifter noise and yes it does work. BUT what works better IMHO is Restore. Be sure to get 8cyl formula if V8, 6 if 6cyl etc. It really works and quiets everything down. As far as the water thing, I would never do that. One slip and you're doing a major repair on the engine, I don't need that. Just my $.02.
