I heard that Richard Petty lives in North or South Carolina, I don't remember which one. I also heard that he is very loyal to his fans. Does he sign owners' cars like Carroll Shelby does? it would be cool to get a third gen Charger "signed" by the man who made them so famous in the 70's. Maybe the trunk lid or somewhere on the dash. How would someone go about making that happen? I guess you could find out when his next scheduled public appearance would be and bring your car with you.

I'm with you. I'd love to have mine signed by him. If you could catch him at the shop, with your car near by, he might do it. Problem is these guys are ALWAYS on the road, at the track, testing, or mostly for Richard, do sponsor appearances. Then there's the new shop, the old shop, the museum, home, the kids camp they run, the Driving Experience...he's a busy man, and it would be pretty hard to ever know where he'd be and when. With Shelby, I have seen some guys have some luck by bringing the glove box door to him, at an appearance where there is time scheduled for signatures.
I figured I'd never catch up with the man, so I bought a vinyl decal of his ornate signature from the museum many years ago. If it will still stick by the time I have the car done, I plan to put it on the trunk.

They were based in Level Cross, N.C. for ever. But now starting this year, they built a shop in Charlotte to be closer to the rest of the cup teams. I'd love to meet Richard Petty as he was and still is my childhood hero. He is the reason I got into 3rd gen Chargers. I'm sure he would sign a car as he has done it in the past. Check out the Petty website. www.pettyracing.com/

Richard Petty is probably one of the most gracious and humble "celebrities" you could ever meet...
I used to work at GM Design Staff in Warren, MI. The wind tunnel facilities are right next to Design Staff. One day on my way in, I saw one of his trailers parked in the lot and thought, it would be cool to meet him but there was little chance that could happen even if he was actually there. Well, at lunch in the basement cafeteria, I was standing in line and I hear a familiar voice step into line behind me and... you guessed it!
Since I was pretty young back then (1987ish), I basically fell all over myself, but he was a true gentleman. I did manage to tell him that HE was responsible for the car I drove to work that day. He asked "How's that?". I simply said "'73 Charger" and he gave me a knowing smile and patted me on the shoulder. I left him alone to have lunch... he is a busy guy. I was a worthless POS the rest of the day!
Richard Petty is the reason I'm so into 3rd Gens... not Dad or my uncles - they always drove /6 Darts and Aspen Wagons. Seeing The King drive that Charger on the occasional weekend race was IT for me.

with Bobby: A story like that means more to me than if Bobby had said, "I have a lunch napkin signed by Richard Petty". I have met more than a few celebrities in my life, and never got even ONE autograph (John Wayne, Vincent Price, Kenny Gee, Alex Baldwin/Kim Bassinger, a ton of old school [70's] Dodgers, Jonathen Winters, Bobby Unser, Robin Ventura, Michael Landon, etc., etc.), and everytime it just seemed to me that it would "cheapen" the experience of meeting them if I asked for an autograph. I have an anecdote for the meeting of every one of them, and they (the stories) mean more to me than an autographed ANYTHING would mean. And I love to tell the stories of when I met them, because I know people like to hear them, just as I enjoyed reading Bobby's story.
Still.........if you don't mind getting Richard Petty to sign it, Glen, I'll send you my 72 trunk lid. ;D
I'll even split the shipping cost with you!!
