They were primitive, but so were the cups. For some reason they were not designed as "holders". They were just a place the set them, like a coaster. I don't think they were designed to be used while driving. Then about the early 80's cup holders slowly started popping up in new cars, then the car makers had to adjust to the ever increasing size of cups. (and people)
Plus back in the 70's (mobile) beverages were an occasional thing, unlike today where everyone has to have a beverage in hand or close by at all times. LOL

I would agree. More a place to set them while stopped to eat, at a drive-in, etc. Worthless while in motion. And of course, what was a "large" drink then is a "small" drink today.

My first cup holder and it worked quite well for many years... Yes sir. We had four of those...on for each door...in our new '70 Ford Galaxie when we went on vacation. They actually worked pretty well.
