Hello Guys, This one has me stumped.... 1973 charger rallye hard top, born with 400 now has 440. I,m changing out the alternator and the alternator is hitting a bolt receiver on the head in such a way that prevents adjusting the alternator tension (yellow arrow). I can install the alternator, however, I cannot pivot the alternator along the adjustment track (red arrow) more than 1/2 inch. It is almost at full extended travel upon install. A 58" belt is too big, and a 57 too small. The original alternator had a larger pulley I believe, I think this was their workaround so the 58 would fit. Really pulling my hair out on this one. I really don't want to grind on the head. I've got to be missing something. This is a 30 min job this is alt2 and day 3.... S,O,S.... drive.google.com/file/d/1YBEaE6b7O7IxOA6Z57dFPo_onvEPvVHS/view?usp=share_linkThanks in advance....Dennis

That alternator is a bit wider than the stock one, couple of milimeters maybe. I had to trim out the rear spacer to make it fit without miss belt aligment. This also made to install a longer belt because the rear of the alt was meeting with block, to be able to get the alternator out of the block area, but still into the adjusting bracket slot.
Now, which belt I had to use? Can’t recall and my car is around 6000 miles from my actual location.
I can’t recall any clearence problem with heads.
True is I never changed engines, allways working on my 400. I was just upgrading the alt for a higher capacity one.

I can see that adjusting bracket is for A/C setup. No real diff with non A/C bracket on lenght but just the extra leg to attach to engine mount provision to reinforce the bracket due the extra traction the compressor adds saving from vibrations able to break parts. Does your car still have A/C? How are you running your belts setup?

Thanks for the help Electro Wizard Yes has AC its on the drivers side. It's definately a no go with this bracket setup. I've tried 57,58,59 belts all no joy... It only gives me less than 1/2 inch adjustment before its at full extension. I cannot swivel the alternator hardly at all before the alt hits the head. I've got this bracket coming from summit: drive.google.com/file/d/1CzHDo3bWPylgLgu-6T6HUaZYoaoOshzq/view?usp=share_linkI'm not sure but it looks like they may have used bracketry from the 400 and did a workaround with a larger double pulley on the front of the alternator so the 58 inch belt would be "just tight enough". The new bracket looks like it moves the alternator upward via the turnbuckle, and away from the head, to create tension on the belt. That new bracket is coming on Tuesday, so I will update then. Maybe it will help someone Thanks/Dennis

As Nacho stated, you may need to grab some spacers and adjust accordinglyi

I need to check my setup to compare. My Laptop ( should have some pics there ) is at home and I’m at job right now around 3 hours away. Will try to check tomorrow. But I can’t recall a boss like that on head or block meeting with my alt.

Does the alt have two possible places to put the adjustment bolt? Seems like one of my alternators (I replaced mine a couple of years ago) had two mounting bosses and I would try to use the wrong one which would only allow a small amount of movement because it wouldn't move in the same arc as the slot in the mount.
