Hello All, Thank you for all the help Here is an update some good and some bad... Been Here a While, thanks foe the pics, they helped a ton. You were exactly right, I was using the wrong threaded hole in the bottom of the alternator. Its all installed now looking good with the 58 inch belts. Thanks for ironing that out for me... I connected the new alternator exactly as the old one was please see pic below: drive.google.com/file/d/1WYD7WcNtdN8Wk8sil5Ne8ZMbq75qeoNV/view?usp=share_linkI reconnected the battery, (New one), correctly pos to pos and neg to neg connecting the negative last. There was a small spark then smoke from the unit in the picture on the firewall. Please see pic with yellow arrow.... drive.google.com/file/d/125tEsGdtmuJ6z6ZZDIZDMztVdHWQl7QO/view?usp=share_linkSide note: Old battery went dead prior to new alt install and volt gauge on dash was climbing dramatically with rev of engine. Old alt had a gravelly spin to the pully when removed,so it likely was bad.... Not sure what to do next a all. The battery was only connected for a second. never did tighten it down just put the neg cable on the post to install it then saw the smoke and pulled it right off. I'm wondering if the wiring of the new alternators has changed in 50 years??? Thanks S.O.S.... Dennis

Another update... Ok, so I found the issue. The power wire to the alternator was grounded to the case of the alternator, hence the short. I have corrected the issue. Now the battery is connected fine but the car is dead, no crank, no lights, no horn, no dome light. It has to be the part on the firewall in the picture below... drive.google.com/file/d/125tEsGdtmuJ6z6ZZDIZDMztVdHWQl7QO/view?usp=share_linkCan anyone tell me what that part is? I'm hoping it's not any deeper than that part... thanks, Dennis

Sounds like your fusable link blew. It's the red wire with the connector that plugs into the black wire with the plastic tag on it attached to the starter relay (yellow arrow). That tag should tell you what gauge it is. Not sure where you can get it with the connector on it but fusable link wire is available at auto part stores. If you feel the black wire it will probably feel deformed and not smooth. Oh, and it would not be wise to put that much stress on wires like the blue one is in the alt pic or you'll be repairing that wire.

Hello, Thanks again for your help. Gotcha on that blue wire, that was a bad moment . The fusable link is the wire on the right side of that pic right and the black wire that wont feel smooth is on the left correct? Thanks/Dennis

Make sure you replace it with fusable link wire. If you follow that it goes back to the alt. It's meant to protect the system like a fuse. This might be it. www.yearone.com/Product/chrysler-b-body/fd5283Google it. You'll come up with a lot of options. I have a roll of fusible link I could send ya a piece but you'd have to make connectors for it.

Hello again, You are right. That fuseable link is toast. I'm hoping the damage stopped there. The year one fuseable link is exactly the one I need. I'm going to message them to be sure its 12 gauge. Thanks for the link I appreciate the offer of fuseable link wire, very kind of you. I used to be good at all this but I lost a step after an injury in 2017 things aren't quite as clear as they used to be, or maybe I'm jut getting old I'll post a small video when its up and running. Thanks again for all of your help. Dennis

Hello Happy Happy Joy Joy... I made a temporary fusible link with fusible link wire from O'Rielly's and it fired right up. No other damage and the Alt is ok too charging just fine. Thanks for pulling my bacon out of the fire . Here is a short video of it idling after many days not running. Sounds like it might have a header exhaust leak on the passenger side.... ugh.... It seems to be timed with the fuel pressure gauge.... yet another gremlin... It's been sitting a while so I guess that's to be expected. I'm very gratefull for your help/Dennis

I was gonna say get a fuse holder and make a temporary setup for quick fix. It's always something with these cars and I here ya on the not as good as ya used to be. For me it's mostly a lack of energy thing along with a lot of arthritis. Having two classics don't help either, Ha Ha!
