What an odd placement for the hood scoop vacuum booster. Where is it on the R/T cars? Surely not in the way of the HVAC system.

That does seem an odd location for that vacuum can. I thought it mounted up front on the inner fender. EDIT: And I was right, shown here as a RESERVOIR.

I've got the charcoal cannister for the EGR system in that spot, but if I moved the battery to the trunk I could put the vacuum boost cannister in that area.

Is there an additional can for the hood scoop? Just wondering. Mine is under the battery and was wondering why, if only one was used, that they didn't just use one location for production purposes.

The diagram DynoDave posted shows one vacuum cannister for both the scoop and the brakes.

I think that diagram is only showing the hood system. I would "guess" that this is a second can to drive the vacuum motor for the scoop alone, and that there may well be a second one under the battery if needed.
I think that vacuum can (and it really does look like a beef stew can with a nipple on one end) sits just a little further back than where the vacuum canister lives. Let me see if I have an old Carlisle photo.

These are from Carlisle 2010. If you look at how that can is mounted, and then look at a '71/'72 inner fender, you'll see the stamped dimple for that mounting screw.

The can under the battery, like mine, drives the HVAC doors so maybe a separate one is needed for the scoop. Still curious to know for sure because at that location on the SB is taken up by the AC dryer/receiver on mine. The schematic shows a vac line coming from both the engine and the brake booster. Hmm. Doesn't show anything for the HVAC so I'll conclude, w/o looking it up, there are two cans. Beef stew can! Ha! Dave, I've got the coffee can style on my Galaxie.

Strange to see the horns were mounted in the engine bay in 71. IIRC the charcoal cannister is where the windshield washer fluid is on the 71, and the windshield washer fluid reservoir is behind the vacuum cannister.
