So I’m posting once again as I’m at a loss and looking for advice. Finally got my car back after some time in a shop to take care of a few issues 1 of which was the fuel gauge not working. Picked it up however after seeing gauge reading 1/4 tank filled it up and it only went to 1/2(tank was definitely full). Took it back to shop where they worked on it for many hours and then they said it was “working for now”. Took it home was nearing winter months and sat in garage until last week. Gauge read full for quite some time after driving it. Gauge finally moved a bit down. Filled it up and needle went to beyond the “F” full line. After driving for over 100 miles and needle barely moving stopped to fill and needle went again beyond Full and then later after stopping and starting never raised from “E” where it still sits. The shop replaced the gauge, the voltage regulator and the resistor as well as the sending unit and was told sending unit was grounded…. any recommendations or tips would be appreciated as I’m not sure these yahoos know what they’re doing….thanks

Gauge and voltage limiter will never give those symptoms. The voltage limiter would fail in fact on all measurement gauges at the same time. Gauges work or not but never partially.
Definitely a sender issue.
New repro piece? They never work like the originals. Aside originals are logarithmic and repros are more linear reading. This makes them to be not exact on the run, but at least correct for empty and full readings.
I had to tweak my new repro sender a bit on bench to make it work decently. Around 10 ohms for full and 72 ohms for empty

Not reading at all sure sounds like the sending unit has lost its ground. This is a pretty typical issue. The OEM ground strap is not the best idea. I ended up drilling a small hole at the very edge of the tank lip and securing a ground wire at that point. That was five years ago and has worked since. Link Nacho say the repo senders are not accurate but at least you'll have an idea there is gas or not.

with Nachoand Goldrush. Looks like the sending unit is bad.

I appreciate the advice and tips. Anyone know of a place where the sending units were worth ordering from?

I personally never have got an issue with ground on sender. My car didn’t have ground strap when I got and never miss a reading. I installed the ground strap 10 years later after get my Charger just for “correctness”, never for need.
About the best unit to get… who knows… LOL.. I don’t think there is a really quality unit around.
Why don’t you try to play with it? Remove and test it on bench… check how it works along the run. Check the play between point and rheostat… and shaft itself.
Check also the gauge reading being constant, grounding the blue wire/plug at the sender end. It should go up to FULL or even a bit above full

I would be surprised if there was more than one company making new sending units for 50+ year old cars. My GUESS is that no matter where you buy it, you are getting parts from the same manufacturer. But I could be wrong.

Maybe that could be true nowdays, but there are/were some senders being sold as MOPAR PERFORMANCE, with plastic floaters and wire between rheostat assembly and outer terminal instead the brass strap. So maybe there are at least two.
I think maybe couple of manufacturers more but not everyone making the same car lines application.
I know in Venezuela long time ago some A body gas senders replacements but operational basic replacement, not resto pieces, were available at parts shops with the black square propylene? floater

Once again asking for some wise (experienced) advice….so recently had to put new shocks on the charger, while car was in the air I asked the mechanic( who matter of fact worked for Chrysler many moons ago before owing his own shop, real old school guy) if he could check if the fuel tank sending unit ground strap was present. To which he said it was “not” there. As mentioned previously gauge, sending unit, resistor and voltage limiter were replaced by a different shop. Could the absence of that grounding strap be the culprit to why my gauge is still not working? I’ve already ordered it from Classic Industries but wanted to get some thoughts from you guys who I am extremely humbled by with all your knowledge and great advice. Thanks!

There are multiple ground straps on these cars for to stop any electrical issues throughout. The missing strap for the sending unit could very well be the culprit. When you get it and install it, let us know.
