My 72 S.E. hasn't run in months. Even with the battery hooked up there isn't as much as a click when you turn the key to start it.
I had read that these year cars had a fusible link which is designed to burn up when it is overstressed, preserving the rest of the electrical system wiring.
I did a visual search for the fusible link under the hood, and I found a sort of link that had definitely looked like it had overheated and fried.
I hope this is what needs to be fixed so I can get going again. What gauge fusible link should be installed? The car is originally a big block 400, and it has one in the car, but it isn't the original engine.
Does the link need to be soldered in, or just put in with connectors? Is this problem common with the third gen Chargers?

better if soldered.
they are available as repro part already assemblied ready to plug.
with fue link blown, you won't have power ANYWHERE in the car. Just starter motor will have power but that doesn't mean will work since relay gets power from ign switch to activate, and ign switch is included on the devices without power as rest of the car.
Factory gauge is 16.
I think really you have a death battery.

All I know are the symptoms, not the actual cause. It had a cheesy alarm that would chirp when you opened the doors. The chirp kept getting weaker. One time when I tried to start the car all electric stuff was weak (lights, etc). Then it went blank and the starter would not engage. After that not even a click when you turned the key to the start position. I have very little time to work on this car without getting my wife mad at me. She does not like this car that much. Yes I have charged the battery several times. I have a better battery from my brother in laws 93 Escort that was in much better condition. Thanks Nacho for telling me what gauge fusible link to replace. I will try that when I get a chance and see if it works.

2 things come to mind from my experience,
first, check out your alternator, autozone and advance auto do it free of charge, it may be weak or totally dead causing you to burn through batteries.
second, if the alternator and the battery is good, youve got a constant draw on the battery for some reason, mine was the starter went bad and was actually drawing full power to the sylenoid even the the key off and the starter not cranking.
dont know if that helps you any, but its worth checking into

On Monday I installed the link. I thought the old one had fried but it turned out to be just a wiring junction with a plastic casing that got too hot. Putting in the link did nothing. Maybe a starter relay could be the problem.
I won't have time to work on the car for a week or two. Bummer.

I have very little time to work on this car without getting my wife mad at me. She does not like this car that much. Something wrong with that picture? Perhaps a Temporary revocation of your Man card is in place??? If my car was so close to being driven it would be on the road!! Even if you took it to a shop your only looking at a $100.00 to get her running maybe $150.00-$200 tops! Alternator $40 Battery $40 Fusible link $10 Relay $20 Labor $100 Not saying all above is bad either, If ya cant do it your self take her to someone that can! a running driven 3rd gen is more fun than a non running one or one thats being restored! Mine is at least one to two years from seeing the streets again.
