To get away from the hijack, What does Mr. dodgeboyd have to do to be able to use the alternator that he now has? Does he need "upgrades" or can he get by simply by running such and such a wire from such and such a terminal to such and such (another) terminal? If you get my drift. (You know well--by now--my complete puzzlement when it comes to auto electricity!!)

Are these the two designs you are speaking of, Nacho?

The alternator that I have at this moment is exactly like the one in DynoDave's above post. See Fig. C6. The regulator is the original type (Black Box). Both are new. Again, I surely do not want to hurt anything. HELP!!!

yes, those are the two round back alts.
First one is the one tipically called ONE FIELD ALT what really is ONE PRONG alt to brush. Gets one green wire with regulated positive, for a while ground or negative is grounded directly to chassis ( brush without prong ). Does match with the mechanical big black box with two direct wires what is the regulator that regulates positive.
Second one is the same old design round back alts BUT THIS ONE is now with both brushes isolated so both being wired now. You can see on it TWO PRONGS both isolated, used on 70 Mopars. One prong gets power directly from ignition key with a blue wire being this the constant source, and now the green wires has become on a regulated negative source, not anymore positive like on earliers. This kind of alt got the flat regulator with the rubber pigtail, triangular shape.
The only difference on these alts is JUST THE ISOLATED WITH PRONG OR UNISOLATED WITHOUT PRONG brush. Rest is EXACTLY THE SAME alt.
So, dodgeboyd, if you already have the two prongs alt and the black box, ONLY YOU WILL NEED to make work the system is ground one of the prongs, thats all. You can use a small wire with a terminal, or symply susbtitute the isolation retaining washer of prong with a metalic washer. If you replace the washer I would cut the prong to be safe that unkook my mistake the regulated positive source coming from regulator, on the grounded brush.
One concept has been always drove about one and two fields alts what is basically incorrect but tipically and popular accepted. You ALLWAYS need two fields to create magnetism, so all alts get in one or another way two fields. I would preffer now called one or two prongs alts ( no matter if square or roundback ).

lest see it now on pics. This is the alternator used on 70 years models, ( and I have know some lates 69 on C bodies too ) with the first electronic regulator introduction You can see how both brushes are isolated and with prongs. Now, some of these alts, mostly sure replacement alts, carried the posibility to get one or two prongs brushes setup. Note on this, a two prongs alt, with ALSO the earlier non pronged brush provision: This alts can it be set like on next pic. Note not anymore the two prongs setup and the grounded brush. Does have the empty provision to the isolator instead: compare with the originally earlier one prong setup, Note the blank space without any kind of other provision: So if your alt does have double provision the BEST and more correct way to ground one brush is simply get the propper brush and change the setup. If does not have the provision, like the first pic, then go with ground the brush as stated on reply above

just for future references and not really ON TOPIC... you can convert also an earlier one prong alt on to a double prong with an easy modification... DRILL the hole to make the provision on the blank space of back of alt ( and to the holding screw ):

In another note appart. If you already got a two prongs alt, you can convert your car on to a double prong/field setup with electronic regulator, what is more efficient. Just need to make a splice, run an extra wire up to alt, get the rubber pigtail and the electronic regulator.
Also there are some big black box regulators internally electronic upgraded though what wouldn't need to add wires, splices etc... However I have read some good and bad things of those.

and as many of you know and to get a COMPLETE info... here is the square back alt, all made to two prongs setup, but what you can "convert" on an earlier one prong setup too, grounding one of the brushes: ( Just noted NOW this one on pic does have some weird cast finish/shape, with some weird reinforcements and brushes not in perfect 90ยบ position between them... anyway, works for the reference )
