Help me please. I just got a 68 D200 pickup. The previous owner replaced the alternator and regulator at O'Reilly Auto Parts. The alternator is a roundback but has 2 field terminals. If I connect the field from the regulator to the field on the alternator, it will not charge. Once I ground the extra field on the alternator, it begins charging. Is this OK or do I have to get another alternator with a single field terminal? It is disconnected until I get an answer. I know this is not a 71-74 Charger, but since this truck will be used for my two 73s and one 74, I thought someone may show a little mercy and help me out. Thanks,

I bring nothing to this thread but HOPE....I do not know the answer to your question, and therefore will not attempt to "field" it in any manner, but: I PROMISE you that Nacho will enlighten you on more than you ever thought you wished to know on the subject of alternators and field terminals and the wiring thereof.... My only suggestion to you, Dick, is that you: 1-Prepare a large pot of coffee for brewing 2-Sharpen up at least 6 pencils 3-Procure a large, blank legal pad 4-Replace the ink cartridges in your printer 5-Place a new ream of paper in said printer, then 6-Wait for Nacho's forthcoming response!!

I don't know....does this diagram help at all? (Ignore the man behind the curtain, and the diagnostic gauges shown in the upper right hand corner of the drawing).

Thanks Dyno. Yes it does. If I have to replace the alternator with a single field, I may use this to install a newer style regulator and just keep the duel.

If that's not the setup you have, that old Motors manual may have others. I'll take a look later tonight if you'd like.

They were on 70s and also some lates 69 C bodies as far I know. An alt work getting both fields from outside to get magnetic fields inside. On earliers one brush was without prong but grounded for a while positive pole was coming from regulator at firewall by the green wire ( of course regulated, mechanical/relay system ). Later dual prongs got isolated because one being constant positive coming directly from Ign switch ( blue wire ) and ground or negative REGULATED from regulator at firewall ( green wire ), transistorized. is isolated because if you ground by chassis, never will be a regulated source, will be constant. And positive needs to be isolated from alt chassis FOR OBVIOUS REASONS of course Being both constant you get MAX OUTPUT from alternator... dangerous for the system so then with two prongs on back of alt, isolated brushes, you need to get the constant positive and the regulated negative what electronic/transistorized setup provides. You can also ground one of the brushes, but then would need a positive regulated source, like on old school mechanicals, OR old school system work design but electronically upgraded available now. Just one of the fields regulated is what gives you the ammount of the inner magnetic field, so then the output, thats why just one of them is regulated. Dual prongs round back alts works and gives you same power than little bit laters dual prongs square backs alts. Diff on output power was increased on mids/lates 70s, with alts getting bigger stators ( more magn field to capture ), but same size and design on the rest than little bit earliers. some more info to make nice upgrades and keep safe the system: www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,33574.0.html
