I'm working on my latest Charger project, an early (1/72 build date) SE with a 318. As I'm pulling it apart from the front I just noticed that the engine block/pan (under all the gunk) is painted orange. I have no reason to believe that this isn't the original engine in place, although anything's possible, but I thought all of the small blocks were blue. To add to my confusion, my '73 400 4bbl is blue. Is it possible for my 318 to have been orange from the factory or has it been pulled & painted sometime in its past? Thanks.

Untill 71 HP ( hemi, 440 and 340 ) engines were orange and rest were turquoise/light blue. I have the chart around
Since 72 ALL engines were painted corporated blue.
there is no chance for an Orange 318 anyway on any year. Just red on very earlier years ( A block )

Nacho,
Thanks for the reply. Once I get back to the firewall and pull the engine/tranny I'll have a better idea of what's going on here. I love these automotive "archaeological" digs with a new project. The previous owner doesn't know much about the car except that it sat inside a storage unit for years until I rescued it out of his cotton field. Thanks again, it sounds like this engine has a "re-paint" since it most definitely is a small block.

is not a block size issue, is a performance issue. the higher performance of all SB was the 340 and was orange. Still SB Same about BBs. 440 was orange being the higher performance of all Hemi was a line appart hehe, all oranges that was of course as stated untill 71 and is a generic rule, however does look there was more details than that:
