I have a 1974 with a 318 that has an 8 3/4 (non sure-grip), also has a 727. I've had the car since 1979, so I doubt they were changed.

The correct rear end for a 73 charger 400 barrel is a sure-grip differential 8-3/4 and on the left side of rear it will have a chrysler star and a number 9 and you will see a 7 digit number the last three numbers will be 489 and that came factory on a 73 charger rallye 400 magnum 4 barrel they also had two other castings but they say the 489 is the strongest now they also had a 7-1/4 and a 8-1/4 axle assembly and are sure grip rears I have a 73 400 magnum and the build sheet and that's what came in mine factory and it's a hemi 4 speed postal gtip have a great day

Welcome aboard chiche. Sounds like a great car. Have any pictures you can share?

Welcome… but the SG grip was optional, not part of any equipment even on 440s. The standard was still open
