I am either going to go with a 340 or 440 with a 727 or an A-833 in my 73.
What rear end would be correct for a 73 with these 4 possible combinations?
Would they all have come with a 8 3/4 from the factory?
A Dana rear end wasn't available in 73, was it?
Thanks.

I don't mean to hyjack your post or anything, but I do have a question though. On my '72 SE, as said previously it's an original 400 car with 727 TF, but now has a 383 with the 727 TF. When I first saw the car and looked under it, it's got the removable center chunk, therefor an 8 3/4" rear axle, doubt there'd be a Ford 9" in it, or anything else, b/c the 8 1/4" has the rear cover similar to a Dana and other rear axles, right? My Duster, originaly a 340 car by the VIN # seems to have an 8 1/4" in it, but it might have been replaced?

Look at the number on the 3rd member, should be 742 or 489 I think..... It is a possiblitly someone replaced it. But since it was a 340 car, then slight chance it had 8 3/4 orginally.

I'm fairly sure that the Charger's 8 3/4 is probably the 489, wasn't it like '69 when they went from 742 to 489 case? Or was that '68 when they did the change? As for both, if I can get under the cars, I'll check the #'s on the Charger, as for the Duster, I'm gonna have to hunt for them, my knowledge is a lot more on the 8 3/4 rather than the other axles.

I believe the rule of thumb was that HP cars got the 8 3/4`s, non hp cars got the 8 1/4.
Hp being defined as 340, 400 4bbl, 440 non hp being 318 and 400 2bbl

I own a "barn survivor" '73 from East Texas that is as far as I know still all original. It has a HP 400 4 bbl with a 8 3/4" suregrip rear. It is not a Rallye in that it has a flat hood and no side stripes and no rear sway bar, but it is a 8 3/4 rear axle.

I have a 1974 Charger Rally 400/4V /auto and it came with 8 1/4 and front and rear sway bars and it came with 8 1/4 rearend? I think that 8 1/4 were pretty common in 73 & 749unless ordered.
