Hey guys, just fired up the engine on my 71 Charger for the first time the other day. The car came with an electric fuel pump, two lines going into the carb. When you turn on the ignition, the pump turns on and builds up the pressure to a reading of about 6-7psi. The pump seems to be loud, a continuous buzzing sound, even once the pressure is built up. Should the pump cut out after awhile? Or should it stay on constantly at what seems to be running full power? Are fuel pumps typically loud? Or should they get quieter when the pressure is built up and the car is idling?

What brand/model of pump do you have?
I know Holley pumps, both blue and red, have a reputation of being very loud. If it is set up to run without a return line, it will be even louder. I would think that a pump at peak pressure would make more noise than one not working as hard.
The Mallory pumps are supposed to be some quieter.
The way the pump is mounted can have an impact on how much noise is transmitted to the body as well.

Mallory pumps are of the gerotor design (like Mopar oil pumps), Holley are gear-drive pumps which are definitely noisier than the Mallory's. They're all "loud" to some degree and some people don't like that part, although they like the lack of vapor-lock that electric pumps bring. They do seem to run "continuously" (not sure whether or not your second line is a return line or what). Before I chuck the whole thing I would consider installing a thick (1/2" plus) rubber gasket/isolator block between the pump and the mounting point on the body. I'm assuming that the pump is mounted "correctly" in that it's inlet is below the fuel tank. Electric pumps are good at pushing fuel, not sucking it out of the tank. Rubber isolator washers beneath the mounting bolts will also further help isolate the sound. If it's still too noisy, I would buy a Mallory, flog the Holley pump on Craigslist or E-bag and try that. Finally, re-install the mechanical pump and put a fuel vapor separator/filter...

I run a electric pump, with one 1/2 inch fuel line. The pump runs constantly, and yes its noisy, I don't mind, but to each his own. I run my pump at 5 1/2 psi to my 750 cfi carb and it works great. I would turn yours down a bit, I think 7 psi is to much for a carb set up, you shouldn't go over 6 psi or you risk flooding. Good luck.

yep just look for a gerotor design , holley does make one its a holley hp pump. the old holley blue , red and black and the carters are a rotary vane design i think, they are loud, but are cheeper.
