Could any one tell me what size 4 barrel will work with a 318 set up with a 4 barrel manifold and 340 heads?

600cfm - 750cfm ,, anything in that range should be ok.
im using a 650 edelbrock performer, stock 4bbl intake, about the same heads as you, 30 over 318 block. i could/should probably go bigger , but i already had the 650. i would love to have a six pack on top .... it will have to wait.

650-750 cfm should be fine, don't think you need to pay big $$ for a bigger carb unless you plan on spending a lot of time at 5K+ rpm. I'm a Holley guy, but some people swear by the TQ's/Eddy carbs...

My '72 Satellite had a Thermoquad atop it's 318. It ran nicely, until the thermoquad did what thermoquads do...the plastic cracked and was dumping gas down the intake.
I changed out the intake and went back to the 2 barrel just in time for the drive to the 2008 Nats.
However, the thermoquad ran really well before the plastic took a crapper.

Look for old Fury or Diplomat cop cars, they all had 318 4bbls.
