My car had the beams "screen" mounted when I bought it, "Carello" brand to use those H4 replacements. I changed for the traditionals sealed beams ( but halogen )because those screen are no good sealed, and water enters untill get the chrome reflection cup off. Of course you need to remove the terminals and plug individually. You can keep the plug isolator to plug the positive on H4 replacement and remove the negative to plug on housing.
Beams area is not isolated from water, dust etc, like modern cars so I think will be a problem with I described. When you wash the car will get fogged beam screen.
just run and get Halogen Sealed beams and will get same results, unless you want the newer Argon ones... but dunno they are available as sealed beams.

I used something like this: www.classicgarage.com/he-70476b.html on my Aspen (remember them). The difference in light output was staggering. The only thing that stops me from doing it to the Charger is they have flat lenses and instantly look 'wrong' on an old car. Well worth doing in my opinion. Yes, you can get 5" ones, in fact there's a kit that supplies two 5" dip/main and two 5" main beam only.

actually beleive it or not JC Whitney sells a standard sized round replacement headlight housing for a H 4 bulb. i think it was only about 40 bucks for a pair too. but i'm not positive that was awhile ago.

I have heard that you should re-wire your lights too. Something about the old wiring not being able to handle the new H4 lights.

Rod I think you'll find you only need to do that if you up the wattage of the replacement H4's. You used to be able to get them with a 100 watt rating (for off-road use only ). In that case you wire the headlamps to the battery with an inline fuse and heavy duty wire then use the existing wiring to turn them off and on using a relay. Simple job, spectacular results. I didn't go quite as far as the 100 watts...
