I thought a bad ground at the regulator would cause an over charging situation..........

I thought a bad ground at the regulator would cause an over charging situation.......... yes, definitelly. Regulator takes the ground from chassis to feed the brush but after regulate the ground to increase the magnetic field. I think I talked about that somewhere One way to check if you have good regulator, or alt feeded is check 12 volts between brushes wires with key ON

Just curious, Bob:
Is your car a daily driver, or are you just firing it up every once in a while?

Let me ask this. The battery in the car is about 5 years old. It was new when I got the car. It has always started the car and seems to hold a charge. Would this in any way, effect the charging if it was going bad? I assumed the car would still charge even with a bad battery or is that only on vehicles with generators?

alternator still should keep car working once started, no matter if batt damaged... diff stuff is if you ar doesn't charge at iddle.
but if batt is able to crank and alt charge at iddle, is still good to at least start on, and then alt will keep car running, except if you start to turn on everything around, what in that case depends on alt output power.
