Today while I was cleaning out the garage, I found a good hand full or two of parts that had fallen off the bench into a dark corner of the garage I like to refer to as the (hell with it, I'll buy a new one corner). To help reduce the amount of parts that make it into this corner, I decided to make a magnetic parts tray that mounts just above my bench. I made the tray out of a piece of sheet metal I had laying around and welded some "L" brackets on the under side of it to mount it to the wall. primed, painted and mounted the thing. Once it was mounted to the wall I stuck on about 5 flat magnets to the bottom side of it (I used hard drive head magnets. These things are very strong and small). Once it was all up, I tossed some random drill bits in it to see how it works and it grabs right on to them (even on the sides of the tray). I think when I get some more time, I will make a few smaller ones to mount on the sides of my tool cart. Now I just have to gather up a couple dozen more bad hard drives from work. ;D

Good magnetic parts trays are worth their weight in gold.
I have about 8 of the 6 inch diameter ones that look like big ash trays, they're spread out all over the garage, wherever I think I might need them.
(They also make great "hold-downs" for sheets, towels, or blankets if you want to keep the sun from frying the inside of your car....something that's important out here in the summer, unless you're into baking bread in your car!!)

I have one of the round ones. I love it when I'm removing interior trim from one of the daily drivers...allows me to keep track of all the screws and clips, and sort them into little groups by the panel they came off of.
