i changed engines and now the oil pressure gauge is pegged before i ever start the engine. what is causing this

damaged sender unit ? wire being accidentally grounded ?

I was gonna say probably a grounded wire somewhere.

Since the system reacts by resistance I would also dare to guess its a grounding problem.

how dumb was this? i put the wrong sending unit in. i used the one from the motor before i rebuilt, it came from a car with idiot lights

I can't remember the number of times I have done similar things. Just let out a good o'l Doh and move one. Glad you figured it out so quickly and easily.
