-sighs- great another problem.... 2 days ago i changed the oil in the engine and my grandpa tightened up the alt belt on the 71 charger. after that we took it for a drive and it seemed fine, some oil out the exhaust bc it was a little too full. but now the car wont start. the engine cranks very slow. battery dead? i wouldnt know why, it was healthy a couple days ago. something to do with the belt or maybe he accidentally unplugged something on the alt? i know i shut the door good and none of the lights were on.....

If the battery is dead, one way to tell if the alternator is charging is, once you've got a good charge on the battery enough for the car to crank, and run for a few minutes, crank it up. See how volts there are at the battery, being old cars, I would say maybe have someone rev it up some while you read the voltage, should be more than 12, if it's 12 or less, it wouldn't appear to be charging. If the battery isn't dead, let us know. On the other hand, if it's not charging, then I would first check all the connections.... From there... Nacho. I've been quite some time right now (at least 20 hours now), so..

That is a very long (fragmented) sentence. I ran out of breath reading it.

its called a run on sentence... i guess thats why i didnt do so good in english class ;D well ive never had to use a charging device and heard of batteries producing hydrogen gas while charging so do i charge the positive cable to the positive post and the negative cable to the negative post or the chassis (ground) like jumping a car

you sure the alt. belt is tight? a loose belt will cause low charge to battery, hence low charged battery.
get a voltmeter, start up the car, see what the alt is charging at by putting the + on the main alt. lead and the - on any piece of metal for ground.

I type things as they come to my head, don't even think about going back over it until someone says something about it, lol.... #Rotz#
