can you buy a wiring harness for the alternator system or do you have to purchase a system for the entire engine bay?

Unless you splice one together which isn't the safest route, you have to get a new one. Get one from Evan's. There the cheapest priced I know of, and top quality too. There is a link in the "Online Parts Stores & Dealers" section.

alternator system wiring is just THREE wires, where JUST ONE needs soding job on old harness... rest is just a complete replacement.
I would make it!
P.S: well, beside the new terminals and regulator pigtal, where you won't touch the old harness.
