will i need a different fuel filler neck if i use a gas tank for a '71-'73 in my '74 charger? the 74 tanks are too expensive, and the filler neck is only thing i can't seem to find on here in regards to it fitting in older model tanks. nacho had said something before about using one from a '71 on a later model, so would need some clarification. biggest issue i can see is the inlet size where it goes into tank. any advice would be great,
thanks! #DriveBurnout#

I'll chip in my 2 cents worth. I have a '72 Rallye, and needed a fill tube. An ebayer here in Michigan had one for sale, which I bought. Part of the reason I was comfortable buying it from him is that he seemed to know about the differences in these tubes. I was impressed enough with his ad and photo that I saved them for future reference. So here they are..free advice, worth perhaps what you pay for it. You decide. "71-72 charger fuel filler tube,i have seen a lot of auctions for filler tubes listed as 71-74 b-body there is a difference, the first picture shows the different lengths and bends .this auction is for the top tube removed from a 72 ralley charger, has very nice clean cap(looks new).the other tubes will be listed in other auctions .the black tube is from a 71-72 roadrunner and the bottom tube is from a 73-74 roadrunner."I think one point being made, that I have read elsewhere, is that there is a depth difference between Dodge and Plymouth models. This ad claims a difference between 71-72 and 73-74 Plymouths. Is there a similar difference between 71-72 and 73-74 Chargers? I would GUESS yes, as the rear bumpers stick out farther, but that's just a guess. I'm sure someone who knows for sure will chime in.

Dave, I would have to venture to say that you are right. I picked one up off a 72 or 73 satellite 2 door....and it was not a match for either a 71-72 or a 73-74 Charger.

oops...guess i should clarify a little bit. I may need a new tank, but not sure yet. i am just trying to get all my eggs together now so i can get my car going.
. i want to use the filler neck that is on the 74 already, but use a tank from an earlier year due to cost reasons of new tank for a 74. The bottom one in that pic looks a little longer, and as said, the 73/4 ones are prolly a little longer since the bumper sticks out a little more. My biggest concern is the diameter of the filler tube, where it goes into the tank. there is enough room on the end that if i need to have it out a little compared to "fully" installed to the lip on the neck, i think that would be ok.....just the diameter that fuzzles me a bit. just wondering if anyone knows if the diameter is the same for the models, or will i have to get another neck.
thanks.

And.............BOOKMARKED!
Thanks Dave for the pic and explanation. I guess I am still learning something new about these old girls every day because I had no idea there was that much difference in the filler tubes.

I think it was Nacho who warned me about the differences, but I can't recall for sure. I too was surprised at all the variations over the years.
As I say, that's all preseneted by an ebay seller. I trusted him, but don't take it as gospel. But knowing the part I was buying came off a '72 340 Charger Rallye, and is going on my '72 340 Charger Rallye...that increased my confidence quite a bit. I got a few other things from him too.

#Bump#
just bumping to see if anyone can tell me about the neck and grommet. thinking they are the same size hole in the tank for the 71-74 b-bodies, so the grommet and filler neck should fit no problem. just looking for some clarification if the filler neck hole size on the tank is the same. thanks! #DriveBurnout#

I missed this thread...good info. My 74 ralley came with no tank or sending unit, and only one tank strap. I did find this neck in the trunk. I -U-ME'd that they were all the same so thanks for the bump!

not the same as in length and curve and whatnot, however it is confirmed now that the hole in the tank is the same diameter through the years 71-74, so you can use whatever tank you want from that period. heard that the straps are different, 71-73 they hook in the front and bolt in the back......and 74 hooks in the back and bolts in the front.......if you can't find the 74 straps, you MIGHT be able to take an earlier one and bend it. i may also be off on the years, but i know for a fact the 74 bolts in the front........i have a 74....lol
