1973 Dodge Charger Rallye
We are the fourth owners of the car. It originally came from Iowa. This car was specifically ordered for the dealership's son and was not to be a "lot car". The only stipulation was that it had to sit on the showroom floor for 1 week before he could drive it. Within that first week, a 63 year old widow walked in and purchased the car. This particular Charger was ordered on 6-26-72 and was delivered to Boyd’s Inc. in Lake City, IA on 9-25-72. The car was then purchased on 10-2-72 by the original elderly lady.
The original owner kept the car until she passed away at the age of 92 in January 2002. At that time the car had 39,000 miles on it. It was then sold by her daughter to a gentleman in Washington who named the car “Grandmas Charger” in memory of the orginal owner. He traded it in to a dealer in Ohio where the third owner purchased it on July 3, 2006 with 43,953 miles on it.
We purchased it on July 3, 2009. It now shows just over 47,000 original miles. We have the complete set of records from the dealership where the original owner had all of the maintenance done to this car. There is an entire 3-ring binder of documentation including the original order form, pre-inspection sheet, original auto manuals, warranty card and the original build sheet for the car, which was still under the front seat when it was sold.
This car is a unusual color combination for a performance car of that era. The exterior color is Autumn Bronze Metallic and it is equipped with a cream colored haylo vinyl top. It appears that most of the paint on the car is original with some minor touch up’s done in the late 70’s or very early 80’s on the front drivers side fender and by the passenger side quarter window. The vinyl top is the original one it left the factory with. It has the black rallye side stripe and was ordered with the black stripe on the power bulge hood. However, for some unknown reason, the hood stripe never got installed by the factory and was delivered without it. The paint shines very well but is not perfect. There are some small door dings and a few stone chips in the paint. The rear bumper has some pits and could use re-chroming. This car is all original and is not restored.
This car was also ordered with the 727 Slap Stick, bucket seats with console, rallye gauges, rallye 340 option, air conditioning, 3.23 sure-grip rear end, 14” rallye road wheels, and factory dual exhaust with the chrome tips through the rear valance. The interior color is cream to match the vinyl top and is in excellent condition. Everything on the car works. The original plug wires and original date-coded plugs are still in the car!
This car is in excellent shape and we wouldn’t be afraid to take it anywhere. So now you know why shes called “Grandmas Charger”
