I am going to be purchasing a 1972 Dodge Cherokee motor home with a 413ci 4bbl in it. The rear is a 9 1/4 with 4:10 gears posi with a 727 auto. This is what the owner has told me. I am going to go look at it this friday to see if i want it. Any thoughts on this swap would be most appreiciated thank you.

Mopars do not have POSI`s, thats a Generic Motors Term. Mopars have Sure-Grips. I am not really up to speed on the motor home thing or 413`s but here are some of my initial impressions. I`d be kind of leery about buying a 413. I doubt that there are a lot of parts available for them. I`d rather put my $$ in a 440. Its very doubtful that the axle housing is the correct length you need. To use it, you would probably have to have the housing shortened. (not worth the cost) The 413 also more than likely has a truck oil pan and you would need to change that to use it on a passenger car.
Honestly, I would not pay significant money for something like that. I am not even sure I would take it, if it were offered to me for free. #Twocents#

413= boat anchor. Honestly you might be able to find a some sort stroker kit for it but don't count on it.

The 413 is a good engine...an original member of Ma's big block family. You can read some about them here. www.allpar.com/mopar/383.htmlAs a core for rebuilding, it is probably fine. No better or worse than any other big block you might pick up. The motorhome version will have been built around make torque to get that big motorhome rolling, so don't expect a lot of high rpm horsepower. The comression ratio is probably also modest ny muscle car standards.

If you remember the Ram-Chargers drag race team, your wouldn't say they were boat anchors. 413 CID were tops on the drag strip back in 1962 & 63, beating hell out Chevy's & fords. The 413 later became the 426(wedge) and 426 Hemi and the now famous 440's The 413 will make power if it is built right. Motor-home engines can be made into assume engine and remember the stock exhaust manifolds are the best stock exhaust manifolds made. They were know as the max wedge engine back in the day( right heads , cam and pistons) , They came as Stage I , Stage II and the Stage III engines.

Anyone that wants to be considered knowledgeable should divest themselves of the information from those links...well worth reading. I used to think of the 413 kind of along the "Boat Anchor" lines, but not anymore!! Thanks again, Dave! One Topic Related question...isn't a 9-1/4 Rear End made by Dana?...I personally think a 9-1/4 Dana with Sure Grip innards would be HOT!! But then I was always a sucker for removable covers on the BACK side of the Pumpkin... that way your Chromed Cover and Cover bolts can be seen by all!!

well like i said i dont have the cash for a 440 and the price is right for this ill be payin $100 for it all so im going to take it no and but nothing hands down takin it. according to my uncle the 413 was a great engine and the path toward the 440 so it is a great ewngine from what i am told. He said you can get good horesepower out of it the torque well not much neede since it will have that already. anyways im takin it cause after all it is a big block and with the 318 i have now it will make a "BIG" difference to me. thanks for you guys for sharing the info.

9 1/4 is Mopar piece, not a Dana. BTW I have a NOS SG 9 1/4 around what I thought to fit down my car, but is 2.91 gear ratio and althought perches are same width, drum to drum distance is a little bit shorter, about half of inch Anyway I didn't fit because was just the axle housing with carrier, but none axle, cover or brake lines. that would make a headache to complete down here I think those come in 77 Monacos down here.
