No tips I can think of. It's been some years since I took one out, but other than working on your back and marking everything so you can recall where it goes (digital pictures help too!), I don't recall it being too difficult.
Is the donor harness from the same model year?

Yes same year different model. My car is a 1973 Dodge Charger SE and my parts car is a 1973 Dodge Charger. Best money I ever spent on the parts car! I've already recouped 50% of it's cost in sold and reused parts.

ok backing up a bit on all this.
I figure the brake lights used to work so I should focus on getting that working first. Noticed that I was looking at the wrong fuse cavity for the brakes, 7 instead of 3. D'oh.
Checked the hazard flashers, they did not work either
Checked the continuity all around cavity 3 and noticed some strangeness. I popped the fuse and brushed the fuse clips in the cavity a bit with a nail file and put the fuse back in and was able to get the hazard flashers going...
Still no brake lights... but I'm confident of the fuse block now.
Tracing the cables back into the left taillight housing I have:
Purple Green (split into two greens) Tan Black
There is also a white coming out of the housing which attaches to the body by the rear left side marker (ground?)
I'm replacing the socket in the middle of the the left taillight housing. Wondering if I have this socket hooked up wrong. Coming out of the hole for the socket I have:
green w/ yellow stripe red w/ black stripe black
I assumed the black is the ground. Does this sound right? Wondering if hooking this socket up incorrectly will cause the brake lights to fail. I also do not have hazards in this socket, but the outside bulb/socket does have hazard... Figure I have hazards all the way to the back but not this one socket so should be able to figure out the socket using the hazard signal...
So some progress, hazards are mostly working and it looks like the trunk light is also working again.

More progress...
It appears that two of the three wires coming out the hole for the middle socket have had new wires spliced on to the ends to make them longer. Splices were further down inside. So that explains the confusion with the colors.
Brake lights are now working except for the new socket Hazard lights are working... except for the new socket Running lights are working... all sockets Left turn signal, signal lamp lights solid (no flash) in the outer most socket, doesn't do anything on the new socket
So the flashing hazards and turn signal don't work on the new socket. Something with the wiring between the outer socket and the middle one... Wondering if one of the slices is bad..
But at least I can drive it.... Going out for a ride...
Shoot me any ideas... I'm lost in a maze of wiring....

Everything stopped working again so I'm converting this repair project to a complete re-wiring project. As I'm unraveling things I'm seeing more and more problem areas from the block out... cut, nicked, spliced wires. Intermitted operation is driving me nuts.
Good news is it looks like most of the wiring from the parts car is in fabulous shape. Just pulled the body to rear harness out and it's clean, just needs some new harness wrap.
Appreciate all the help from this site so far.
