I fitted my early '72 (p/n 3466330) filler neck today in preparation for bringing the rear bumper in with a pair of '72 bumper brackets. I assumed that the original '74 gas cap would work but it's loose in the filler neck. Was there a difference year-on-year?

Yep. I had the same issue only reverse. If I had a 73 cap, I'd send it to ya.

Found it - $4.78 shipped from Rock Auto. I'm sure it's a forlorn hope to think that the correct gas cap will cure my current no-start issue, but ... From the Stant website: Early: Late:

Huh! The one I have looks like the late and was still loose. Maybe I have another problem. Well, I do have another filler pipe, maybe that'll solve the issue.

I have what looks like the late style on my '72 SE. If you look at the filler tube end of the cap, you will see 2 sets of tabs. The cap must be turned until the short tabs engage with the filler neck. In a visit to a 1/4 mile dragway early this month, I discovered that necessity, by dumping some fuel at the starting line upon launch. Needless to say, the cap doesn't seal if it is merely hanging on by the long tabs.
