Hello, The gas tank in my 1971 charger is leaking at the sending unit. Is this part screwed in? Cab I try to tighten it and how would I go about doing that. Thanks for your responses.

You may need a new gasket as well. 1948757 is the gasket 1730095 is the retainer (as they call it. Some numbers you just remember. I wouldn't doubt Chrysler still has them. They were universal up to the 80's.

Actually, this gasket can be changed without dropping the tank or the use of special tools. It's a twist lock, like the gas cap. Once the rubber fuel & return (if equipped) lines are disconnected, you can use a cheap electric fuel pump to lower the fuel level below the plug. If you don't have a spanner, you can use a large channel-lock plier to twist it! Hammer & chisel is NOT recommended

You guys just made my day. This will be the cheapest thing I've done so far. When I bought the car the tank was almost empty. It wasn't until I filled it up that I realized the tank was leaking. The sending unit appears to be about mid way on the tank. The tank is about half right now. It is more of a sweat and an odor than an active leak. So I'll just drive it around the block once to drain the other half. .
