... The biggest slow down occurred when I realized I need to drill holes in the firewall for the tach wire and hideaway sub-harness. ... I'm pretty sure the tach wire routes thru the bulkhead connector on my 71...

I had to drill the big hole for the hideaways. There was a dimple on the firewall to locate that "correct" area. Below that was a smaller dimple, which indicates a factory opening point of some sort. I chose to use that dimple/hole for the repro tach harness, which comes with a grommet for firewall routing. Whether it is as original...don't know.

Well...I made a little more slow progress today. 2 steps forward, 3 steps back seemed to be the course of the day. Had to drop the column and tilt the instrument cluster out again...#$%at!! That was to get the tach harness on. I could not get to one of the connectors from the backside. The stud is so close to the steering column support bracket. Do the people who design this junk ever install one in a car? Replaced the front lighting harness with one from a hideaway car, installed the a headlight motor...and the hideaways work like a charm. Highlight of the day! All the gauges work except the $%#at!! tach. Does anybody know if these doo-doo charger specialties 8k tachs work with a Pertronix?

Anybody want to buy a Charger Specialties tach? I think I have 2. It's bad enough that they don't look as original. Not working is a total kick in the "nads" I just ordered a new board for my original tach. I have a couple decal kits somewhere....in both original style and white. Probably will pull that at#$%!! dash out again, and install decals and rebuilt original tach.

Gary, the bezel is pretty decent. If I recall correctly, I touched up the silver around the gauges with a silver paint pen and polished the lenses a few years ago. I chose this cluster because it already had the tach installed and was sitting on a shelf as is. A few years ago, I had it another car and "knew" everything worked....though at that time the tach seemed inaccurate. I was not really concerned about it being perfect...because the car is not, nor do I care it to be. Just something that looks relatively decent that I can drive when the urge hits. Now that I have to pull the stinking thing again for the tach...I will probably spruce it up a bit more. The speedo has some light surface rust, so I'll probably use a new decal on it too.
On the bezels you restored, did you add some black to the wood grain too?
