On my 74 318, can I use a screwdriver at the starter relay to try and start the engine, without any damage to the car? I remember doing it on my 70 charger years ago.

Do the same with my 71SE. Starting with the key is intermittant at best.

Do yourself a favor and get a remote start button. Pretty cheap and you'll have no sparks flying near the battery. It's real handy if you need to bump the engine over while looking for the timing mark or doing a compression check. In fact I found it real nice to lay under the car to do a compression check on my big block and ran the remote start down under to roll it over from underneath. That goes for you too Arch.

Yeah it's one of those things that when you get one you say to yourself "Why didn't I get one of these a long time ago!" They're so handy.

Are you talking about a clip type remote or can it be hard wired? And after starting the motor, I guess that the key switch must be turned to the run position?

I'm talking about a clip on one where one clip hooks to the positive terminal and the other clips on the solenoid terminal on the starter relay but I'm sure you could hard wire it in if you can't solve your problem. You leave the key off if you just need to roll the engine over to find the timing mark or for some other reason or turn the key on and use the remote button to start the car if you need to hold the throttle open under the hood to keep the engine running etc.

I was wanting to use it as a backup just in case the car will not start at a car show. Would that be fine?

The typical 'remote starter' will only spin the engine. Works fine for starting the car IF the ignition switch is in the 'ON' position & making good contact. If you go 'old skool' enough: there once was a remote starter that didn't care if the key was in the ignition or even if it was your car that you were trying to start. They were frowned on & phased out. The only difference is an extra switch & wire with alligator clip that attaches to the coil. Snap-On made a handy one back in the day. It was a pistol grip with a trigger for engaging the starter & had an on/off switch at the butt to actually run the engine. That will be hard to find (I just looked. My boss, when I was a mechanic had 1 & I liked it!). The Actron Trigger is what I have. Bought it 25 years ago & they're still making it for under $20 - but it will only spin the engine or bump it as needed without the key on.
