did we not previously establish that the factory tilt columns in these early cars were column shift only? That is correct Dave. There has also been some discussion as to them being GM sourced. Dave, were floor shift tilt columns available in the 75-79 B bodies? I really want to say that they were.... I always figured that they would be a possibility to use in a 73-74, since they use the same k frame and suspension as the 73-74 Chargers. I know that you would have to do some work on the wiring as the 75 and up cars have radically different ignition switch plugs.

Dave, remember that scrap bucket at Carlisle that had the tilt column for free? I should have taken it.

I would almost bet laid side by side you could interchange the inside shaft from one to the other and with slight mods to the mounting system make a custom one. I put together a column using 72 outer mast, F body bearings and 73 housing and shaft and it all fit together fine. But no probably no plug and play option from Ma. Interesting to note that it could only be had from factory with power steering and that one steering wheel. I'm guessing the tuff wheel was too light and would break the housing when it flipped up without restraint like most are prone to do. Tilt has always been a top priority on my other cars but this one I'm leaving alone.

Tom, you are correct..the 71-72 Columns were made with A/C Delco parts... before A/C Delco was purchased by General Motors.I am not sure if A/C Delco made the whole column for Chrysler but I found this information when I was restoring my 1971 steering column and I needed a new ignition swith. The ignition shitch is located down towards the lower part of the column and I have a friend that has worked for a Mopar dealership as a parts man for years and the NOS switch he got me was in an A/C Delco box. Also, every one of the 71-72 Tilt Colums that I have seen have had column shift.

I would guess that if you were going to swap to one, that this would be the least amount of work. But I bet it's still going to be a PITA. The AC is Albert Champion, is in Champion Spark Plugs. He lost control of that company, then joined GM as the head of the new AC (Albert Champion) Spark Plug Co., wholly owned by GM. This was later merged with Delco to form AC Delco. But that division, as far as I know, was never in the steering business. That was always the providence of Saginaw Steering.

Well, all I can tell you is that the ignition shitch that I got was in an A/C Delco box, and if you take a 1971-72 Column apart you will see that the parts on the inside look like GM parts...

Got it. Yes, the switch, being electrical, would be AC Delco. And I would not be at all surprised if the column came form Saginaw.
While GM had a division for EVERYTHING (Rochester for carbs, pumps and tanks, Guide for lighting, Harrison for thermal - a/c, heat and radiator, etc.), I don't know that Chrysler ever had a unit that made columns. Maybe, but I've not heard of it. Comes with being a smaller company I guess.
