Hi, heavy handed bro in-law has destroyed my 73 Charger steering column. (Trying to hammer onto steering box spline when mis-aligned). I've been offered a cheap 70 Charger column to replace it. In photos, it does look similar. Question is...are they interchangeable??? I've seen after- market columns listed as fitting 65-74,

No, 70 would not be interchangeable. 73 column is a ONE YEAR part. You might be able to use a 74 column, if you get the whole entire/complete assembly. Some differences in coupling location and design, but still same total length to steering gear box.
Did he destroy the whole column or just the coupler? Finding just a coupler would obviously be a lot easier and cheaper.

Thanks Tom, Wheel is now grinding (bearing?) and rubbing the column housing. Have broken one steering puller trying to separate wheel. Also self-cancelling indicators are now very stiff. Will try another puller, but may have to scrap the whole column.

Just spent the day with a puller and a slide hammer but to no avail. The steering wheel refuses to budge. The bearings are shot and the turn signal switch may need replacing. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement column for a 73. Don't want a chrome one though. Floor shift, no cruise

I think there is one on Bbodies only. It may be listed for 1-4, not sure what year. I just sold a very nice one after having it listed for 2 years.

I am going to try and find a hydraulic puller and maybe add heat. If the wheel gets destroyed, I can get a new one but would like to save the column. Will check Bbodies out in case I have no luck. Cheers

It's kind of crude but we used to pull wheels in the salvage yards by loosening the nut ,put your feet against the floor and push against the bottom of the wheel with your knees and pulling as hard as you can on one side of the wheel with your hand, then the other, "walking" it off the shaft. Leave the nut on or your friends might have the same funny story I have about a buddy who did this and it came off suddenly busting his lip. In case it comes down to cutting it off, the wheel is heat treated and won't cut with a hacksaw.

Having removed the whole column, I dropped it off with a trusted mechanic. He used some voodoo and the wheel was separated by the morning with no damage. ?
