The compressor on my 5 year old (approximately) Craftsman 60 gallon locked up today. I will probably get another one since they are so darn cheap ($500)

Tom, it may be worth your time to check out Craigslist...you might find one close and a whole lot cheaper.

If the motor and tack are still good, Harbor Freight sells (or sued to) just the compressor portion. Might save you a few bucks over a whole new unit.

If you end up junking what you have, I might be able to use a part or two!

The tank is just a storage device and it doesn't care how big the compressor is on top. I saw some great deals at HF and they have coupons. Look for a 2 stage as they run cooler and pump up faster. www.harborfreight.com/145-psi-3-hp-twin-cylinder-air-compressor-pump.html $169.00 for 3 or 5 horse. Just a recommendation but if you go replacement, take the tank to the car wash and clean out the tank while it is apart. Lottsa nasty stuff in a tank and doesn't hurt to start all new.

Ah...wish I would have known about that HF replacement compressor before I went and bought another unit. But the new unit was less than $500. $699, on sale for $499, and a $35 off online coupon.
I was thinking about plumbing the old tank in with the new unit. To give myself 120 gallon tank capacity. However, I decided that was overkill for what I use it for.

New compressor in, wired up, pump broke in for 30 minutes, and oil changed. Sears broke the pallet that it came on, so I built an new one.
