Will need a pad for the tank in the next few months, have a new tank, sending unit, grommet, reconditioned straps and j-bolts and nuts. Has anyone purchased one? I just came across the one on Mega Parts site. Or a suggestion as to where to buy one, thanks.

Interesting...the rolled-up pad they show on their site is shiny. The ones I've seen are more like roofing tar paper, which I have seen people use as a substitute.

Hi Dave, actually came across one at DMT which I think I will probably go with, funny he even mentions the roofing tar paper.
Description/contents: NEW gas tank pad for 71-73 B body Charger, Coronet, satellite gas tank pad. This is the saturated felt paper the goes between the gas tank and the trunk floor and acts as insulation/sound deadener
Note: 74 B bodies had a raised hump on the tank and in the trunk floor. I have another list for tank pads for those tanks.
Materials This is heavy, 060-070" bitumen saturated felt paper. Not .030" thick 30lb Home Depot tar/roofing paper. This is custom made for us in the heaviest gauge the manufacturer can produce. Our pad are very similar to the original .070" saturated paper thickness, though more heavily saturated (a good thing for it's purpose) and doesn't have the waffling but I am working on equipment to do that.
The original material was BROWN ASBESTOS FELT made by Armstrong Industrial Insulation (now Armstrong flooring). It was commonly used as a insulating and building paper used from the 40's through the 70's. Unfortunately for guys looking for original style ASBESTOS, it's NOT available.

The "std." roofing felt is quite thin, where the factory pad was thicker. But...that doesn't mean you have to settle for the cheaper, contractor / spec. home grade roofing felt. As with most thing in life, there are upgrades. Here are two at Lowes, for instance. The smaller 200 sq. ft. roll weighs 71 lbs. in the H.D. product, but only 31 pounds in the std. grade roll, which is slightly larger at 216 sq. LOWES HDLOWES LDBut if he has a product that works well, that's probably the way to go.

The place to buy your pad is Detroit Muscle Technologies - code/sku - BXX7173TP01 - MOPAR B-Body 71-73 Charger, Satellite, Coronet, gas tank pad insulation .070 felt paper. I had my original and when compared it was very close. Probably missing the asbestos..!
