An engine can run too rich or too lean, how do you determine when its at optimum adjustment? What are the best ways to tell its burning fuel most efficiently?
WOAH!!! tooooooooooooooo many factors, from stock engine, mild build, fully mod engine, city height, fuel quality, useage of the car... and lot to post and learn. I'm not the one to talk about.

That was a good read and goes to show how important it is to have the engine tuned properly. I have a 1407 Edlebrock 750 cfm setting on a stock 440. After a long process of learning and tinkering with the carb it starts and runs fine, it was way out of adjustment when I got it. Just seems to me its a little rich smelling so I was wondering if new jets were needed to fine tune from here. I don’t know much about size of jets and needles so I’m looking for advice. By the way I did put a pressure regulator in gas line and that helped things a lot. There was a old mechanic that told me Edy’s cant handle much fuel pressure and he was right. If you have one and its giving you problems try that. Ive got mine down to 3 lbs psi., unregulated pressure was 8 lbs.. Thanks for responding, this site has been the best tool in my toolbox!
I still have to learn and practice but it has being 5 years since my last car ride. My car has been getting hard smelling fumes ( makes eyes to cry ) since stroked and I haven't found how to fix it yet ( allong with pinging over 3400 rpms at highway and even lower under load/hills ). Not black fumes as a tipical rich mixture, but fumes made me to cry

Are you smelling this at idle, as well as on the road? Any black smoke one accel.? A little puff when you first stab the throttle is OK, as it goes rich for a moment from the accelerator pump shot. But more than that's an issue.

well I can't tell while driving LOL... I can just say it while car is iddling and I go to rear of my car. Never black smoke at any moment. really hurts my eyes when I'm back of my car iddling.

I wonder if 3 psi is enough pressure if you have it full throttle, I think you might run out of fuel. I have a 750 eddy on my 440 and its set at 5.5 psi and works great and runs just a little rich. If your eyes are watering that's way too much fuel
