Anybody see any differences in package trays out there? Most seem to be about the same price, made in the USA. Legendary priced much higher. Any better? I read a old thread that stated there was only one manufacturer. There is a local supplier that sells one and I plan on calling to see if they stock it so I can make the 45 minute run out to see it.
The other thing I'm pondering is....my SE came with slots and the rear speaker. Previous owner had some 6x9" speakers mounted which looked funky cause they didn't cover the slots completely. Was considering getting a tray w/o slots so it looks better if I were to install a stereo with 6x9's but then again mounting said stereo is difficult in these cars. A radio seems to be way down on the list of things to do since it's not a daily driver and when I do drive I just use Pandora on the phone. I'll probably just go with the slots and eventually hang a stock speaker in the trunk for show.

Hard to imagine there are too many people actually MAKING these.
Personal choice: If I were doing aftermarket grilles mounted on top of the tray, I'd go with your idea of a shelf with no slots. I'd also go this way if I was doing something custom (covered in material).
If I were wanting a stock look, I'd get the slots, then add high quality aftermarket speakers bolted to the deck from underneath.
But my car will not be a pure resto. Obviously if you want that look, inside and out, you know what you'll need to do.

Don't think I'll ever put a stereo in it so I'm gonna go with the slotted one. I dought I'll want to pull the tray out in the future to hang a oem speaker either. These projects are getting tougher as the years go on. Waiting out winter cleaning interior parts indoors. 😀

These projects are getting tougher as the years go on. You ain't kidding. I put a rack and pinion in my Camry earlier this week. (On the ground, in the driveway.)
When I was done, I took a shower and went straight to bed. Body felt like someone had been beating me with a bat while I did the install.

Or as I say "I feel like I got ran over by a truck." And on real bad days "He backed up and ran over me again."

I was thinking about getting a big piece of corrugated cardboard (or the non-corrugated kind if I can find it, but I don't know where I'd turn that up) and covering it with the extra headliner material that came with my headliner. I'm not paying $150+ for Legendary's cardboard - although I would if I were putting it in a mint R/T.

6x9 on passenger side, 5x8 on driver side, but driver side screw holes pattern doesn't match with nowdays 5x8 speaker cases as far I recall
$150 for the package tray? I paid something like $40 at megapartsusa

A piece of masonite would work very well for this Jeremy. And it is not unlike the O.E. material.

I made mine once with a cardboard called Scholtz? Shulttz? Actually dunno how spell it but that was how was called in Venezuela, and is the same used on door panels. Flat on one side and textured on the other

Masonite is smooth on one side... ...textured on the other. Comes in a couple of thicknesses.
