Yeah, I know. I'm used to it. I go out for 75 days and come home for 60. I get home and have to start all over. I've gotten to where I actually make notes about the things I need to work on when I return. Being that I have 5 automobiles under my belt right now, they consume a lot of my time. Then there's taking care of my property (8 acres to keep up), home projects (currently a bathroom project), and family matters. For instance- will be a first-time grandfather when I return home in October. Oh God I know THAT'S going to consume a lot of my time. The Charger and my truck will likely feel a bit of neglect come October. But yeah- plenty of time to ponder over it. I also discuss it with some of the guys I work with... there's a few that have older cars and we have a good time talking about them.

Safe journeys my friend.
We'll always be here, if you get some internet time while at sea.

Thanks. Oh yes... I'll have internet. Tomorrow begins my two day trip to Alaska. I'll have plenty of world wide web time before I join the ship Friday morning. Internet at sea isn't the best... but sometimes we spend more time in port than we do at sea... and then I just use my own.

Hi guys. I returned from sea a couple of weeks ago. Took the car out of the garage last week after a 3 month rest. One day, I was out till after dark. On my way home, I thought about grabbing the steering column. Sure as sh*t, the thing was quite warm! Keep in mind that I had started my way home a good half-hour or more AFTER the sun set... so the idea of the sun beaming down to heat things up is now tossed out the window.
Also, I've been shopping around for insulation to go under the carpet. What I'm finding looks like a thick rubber mat. Hmmm... rubber mat on a hot floor... someone wasn't really thinking very well when they made that. Doesn't anyone sell something like what was originally under there? I remember the factory insulation in my Duster... it was some thick brown fiber-like padding. Not a thick rubber mat.

Okay, since there are no responses, I guess I need to type some more. I recently changed the driver side exhaust manifold (had a HUGE crack) and the master cylinder. While all that was off at the same time, I decided to look around for a while since I could see so much more with those parts off the car. I zoned in on the steering shaft going into the tube, and thought that maybe something should be covering that opening a little bit better... and maybe the gap I see in this photo is how the hot air surrounding the exhaust manifold is getting into the steering column and heating it up so much inside the car.
Since this photo was taken, I have taken a piece of aluminum foil, wrapped and secured it to the bottom of the tube with a zip tie, and then wrapped it around the shaft where it enters the tube. It closes up the gap you see in the photo and allows the shaft to turn with no problem. The result? I get NO MORE heat inside the car at the steering column as has been discussed in this thread! So I have to assume that something is missing that prevents hot air from entering the tube.

You might want to use Flickr to get your pics on this site. That's what I use.

Charlie, A) I'm glad you found the source of the heat in your column. That's a new one on me. I'd like for everyone to see this photo. B) Let's keep the comments clean, please. C) Our sites photo hosting is full, so you cannot attach the photos directly here. I've never used google for hosting, so I really can't guide you on how to do that. I can see the tags you were try to use. They appear appropriate. D) Like Hank, I too use Flickr. If you elect to give it a try, this (now somewhat dated) guide should show you the steps you need to follow to be able to post an image from there. wichargerguy.proboards.com/thread/21280/hosting-posting-photos-flickrIf all else fails, I can host them for you. I've sent you a PM with the information on how to do that.
