New man here on the forum. I'm looking at and about to buy a very restorable '71 Charger. Body is in great shape; no damage apparent, but one issue concerns me. The front bumper is not original - has slots for a jack, not holes, so is not a '71 Charger bumper. It is also about 3/4" too long and sticks out that much beyond the right front corner. All sites I have researched indicate that front bumpers from '71 through '74 are interchangeable. Any ideas why this one is too long and protruding? Any way the body could be reduced in width without showing damage?

Well they all will fit but won't be correct. The '71 did not have slots for the jack. It use a claw type of jaw to lift from underneath so bumper will have two indentations to fit the claw. Don't know about the length but the fenders are different in the body lines so maybe..... I can get you some measurements but I'm heading out of town, with the Charger, for the weekend so would have to wait. Also with the '73/74 there was the addition of the filler so maybe is different in length. Nacho will know.

Aside the looks, 71/74 bumpers has nothing to do with the body/bumper gaps... but the brackets...
I haven't noticed any difference on width either. And in fact making the filler removing mod on 73/74s, they fit and look the same than any 71/72.

Yes the brackets pushed them out so if there was no difference in the width something is misaligned. Which leads me to what I saw today at a show. A 71 with a large gap between the front bumper and fender. Figured he had 73/74 brackets on it. Forgot to pay attention to whether it had the emblem on the bumper.

Is not posible to interchange front bumper brackets between 71/72 and 73/74. Frame rails are at diff height. So, it should got some other aligment issue
Rears are posible thought

I do know that the 71 72 brackets are shorter than the 73 74's. I've seen guys take 71 and 72 brackets to use on the 73 and 74's to tuck in the bumpers to cover the gaps that the bumper fillers took care of since the fillers are not made anywhere.
