I must be getting too old for this ... Changing my oil today on my 440 magnum with a Wix 51515 and the oil filter is rubbing on the power steering belt. Please see attached picture: flic.kr/ps/42ZWVWThe original filter was similar to the wix in size and there were no issues. I must be doing something simple wrong. S.O.S. Thanks/Dennis

Hello Guys,
Twas a long day with little result, many road blocks.
After looking at this again it looks like the power steering bracketry is wrong.
The 440's on the internet have the power steering filler cap up high by the front of the drivers side head. On my Charger its way low, in fact the PS high pressure line is competing for space with the battery tray.
If someone could shoot me a picture of their power steering bracket & pulley it would be a great help.
Apparently I'm still untangling some things from previous owners....
Thanks/Dennis

Hold on and let me see what pics I have.
Edit: I got a few good pics but I need to upload them to flickr. I've got to get to work so don't have the time now. Should be able to this evening.

Hi 71se3834v, Thanks for chiming in I'm looking at a picture you had sent me earlier when you were helping me with my alternator bracket... please see below: flic.kr/p/2p4D7JGThat looks like exactly the setup I'm trying to do. Currently my power steering pump is mounted lower on the water pump housing which is causing the conflict between the PS belt and the Wix oil filter. I did notice in your picture that your water pump housing exit hose to the radiator is on the drivers side. My lower hose exits the water pump housing on the passenger side. My current water pump housing may not accomodate moving the PS pump to a higher location. I'll see if I can determine that today. Plus my charger has ac so that's in the mix as well. Thanks very for your help. It is much appreciated. Thanks/Dennis

71/72 are very diff. monsters from 73/74 on this. Can’t be compaired.
While on 71/72 BB cars got the water pump inlet on driver side getting the steering pump higher, the 73/74 BB setup changed the water pump inlet to passenger side to allow to get the steering pump lower into the engine bay I GUESS for those cars with an air pump (emissions stuff, specially installed on C bodies) installed just right above the steering pump.
No iddler pulleys used on 73/74 no matter if AC or not. The belt pulley iddler was just for 71/72 with AC.
Yes, the steering pump belt is at the same height than the oil filter. AS FAR I KNOW Originally these BBs should get the short filter version, althought long filter fits. I have allways used the long on my car without any issue more than some small clearence problem when installing (nothing to worry really), but no problem once installed… but maybe some manufacturer could get a filter even larger?

Hello, thanks for the replies My Charger is a 73, sorry for nit being clear about that. Thank you for sending the pictures. The 3rd picture shows me exactly what I need to do if I want to use the longer Wix filter. Here is my current PS setup: flic.kr/p/2p4K14cOn a side note, I had maybe 700 miles on my oil change & the oil was dark dark, so I went ahead and changed it out with 6 qts of 20/50 Valvoline high zinc and a wix short filter. The K&N filter that was on there was very heavy and really didn't drain out normally when I removed it. I'm thinking it had an internal failure. Thank you for the assistance, it's nice to get help... Dennis Your setup is correct. The 3rd pic shown is for 71/72 with AC where the steering pump iddles the belt tension just by itself. The Alt iddles the belts tension for AC and alt, and the water pump gets a separated pulley iddler as I mentioned. This is a very diff belt chart and pulleys setup On 73/74 setup, the steering pump belt is also used for the water pump, so iddling the tension on steering pump makes the job also for the water pump. no water pump iddler pulley for it. On non AC cars, the alt and water pump run on same belt, while steering pump runs on its own belt
