This may actually belong in the "Part Interchangability" section but I put it here for a general question. Are the steering columns between 71-74 different lengths?? I am starting to think that my steering column is shorter than it is supposed to be, if that makes any sense. Is there a difference in length between the years?? Matt

I don't think there's a difference between the '71-72's and the '73-74's, except for the power steering ones being different than the manual steering ones. My interchange book however does list different numbers for the 71 and after Nov. 2, 1972 ones..

talking about JUST THE SHAFT
71/72 the same. then 73 and 74s.
as complete assemblies, 73/74 are interchangeable, but not partially. Same lenght on these two ? of course
Now, I think you can fit a shaft inside another year column assembly.
Never measures 71/72 against 73/74 lenght difference really.
Now, column parts are the same, except for hazzard switch area and courtesy light on first 71 half.
74 bracket is diff too, being 2 bolts instead 3 bolts location on earliers.
I can't recall right now on another diff. I THINK the plate to firewall is kinda diff too, but not related against the firewall itself like an extra attachment on column against plate

I was just about to post that 71-2 columns are not the same length as 73-4 columns. I distinctly remember having a problem with attempting a 73 into a 72 swap 12-13 years ago. The result being that my black 72 is now buckets, aftermarket floor shifter but still has a column shift column with the shift handle removed................................something I really need to change. However, I just walked out to one of my buildings and compared a known 72 column to a known 73 column and they in fact do appear to be of the same overall length. I don`t think I have ever seen a 71-74 b body with manual steering. Not saying that they do not exist, just that they must be somewhat uncommon.

Thanks for the info guys. The reason that I asked is because I was looking at the "electrical" section and there is a picture that Nacho posted in there for someone and where the steering shaft bracket mounts to the bottom of the dash assembly is about 1 1/2 inches too short on my car, so I am barely holding on to the steering column. That is why I asked. I will figure it out one way or the other, but any suggestions would be great also. Thanks. Matt

I mean which pic and which bracket ;D as stated, the lenght of shaft could it be aprox the same, but CONFIGURATION allong the shaft is definitelly different.

Didn't 73-4's have a rag joint before the steering box, which the 71-2's do not have?
