other than the afore mentioned front end work the only thing I can think I need a press for is some rear diff work. my question is this, how big of a press do I need? found a 5ton for $90us, and that is how much a shop wants just to pop out old CA bushings. is a 5ton enough to do bearings from the rear diff and pop out/in the CA bushings or should I go for the 12ton model? I know bigger is better, but for light auto work, I don't need a BIG press, so thinking a smaller one might do. Just looking for opinions on how a 5ton would do for bushings and bearings and whatnot.

I should think that would be more than sufficient.

I don't see why you would need anything bigger than that to do the stuff you want to do....

About a year and a half ago, I bought a smallish $100 press. It worked fine for pressing in lower control arm bushings. I have not used it for anything else. I used a $35-$40 specialty tool to press the upper arm bushings in and out. My job was going to charge me 1 hour labor to use the shop equipment....so instead I just bought a cheap press.

yea, know what you mean Tom, so is why I was thinking of buying one. never know when it may come in handy in the future, and for the same price they want to press in the bushings for me, I may as well just get the press. thanks to all for the input!

Your employer was going to charge you for using the shop equipment??? You got to be joking what kind of *&%$&^#$%&% is that Id tell them what they could do with it! As far as presses go I have a good size unit in the shop 20 ton But I have need and wanted a mid size Arbor press more than that big monster I have

Yes, it is "company policy" that employees have to pay for services that the obtain (or do themselves) within in the shop. Whether it be using the brake lathe, using the press, using the strut spring compressor.....etc etc The only "break" we get is our 20 % employee discount. I was doing a rear strut job on my sister in laws Corolla about a month ago.....and they wanted 1 hour labor...about $100 (minus 20%) to use the strut spring compressor. Instead, I bought a Lisle tool that did the job okay for $35. There most certainly is a lot of "looking the other way" that goes on...However, I steer clear of that. It would be stupid to get fired because I insisted on using the companies equipment without paying. From time to time...the loss prevention department of the company does put stores and service departments under video surveillance...and fire employees for petty things like this.

So the company lost out, you got the work done, for less money, and have tools that will last you a lifetime. Can't beat that.

Boy, Tom....that "policy" sucks big time !!
Heck, I've even had truck driving jobs where the drivers were allowed to use the maintenance shop's facilities and equipment on their own projects!!
Seems there is no end to the potential greed of some people and corporations....
They would do well to remember the time honored axiom of:
"Pigs get slaughtered!!" ;D
