I hope this helps some of your questions about the interchangability of parts. This was from a post from Nacho74RT on the other Charger site from a couple years ago. If you have anything to add to this post in reguards to differences, feel free to do so.
Hoods;
71- large grille.
72- 2 large grilles with around 3" blank space between them.
73- smaller grilles with a foot and a half blank space between them.
74- no grilles.
Differences are the same for both ( bulged and standard ) hoods.
The '71 insert hoods come in two vent styles plus there is a third that seems to be a replacement one based on later stampings. Some '71 hoods have the small gap between the vents like the auction hood. Some have no gap. There are also ones that have the two small sets of vents. These seem to be replacement ones.
Trunk lid, the 71 had holes on inner frame to add the rear wing, fit all years.
Roof... except inner sides frame of 74, because the shoulder belt nut is located centered to the shoulder belt with retractor on 74.
Fenders are interchangeable and match with body lines, The 71 has different sidemarkers and 71/72 have wheel opening cut little lower ( about 1 and a half inch ). Also inner front splash shield are different but you can to put it with the complete fender assembly without problem. Headlights buckets are shorter also, because bumpers on 73/74 are extended ones to rubber fillers and those are longer for that reason. But fit.
Glass, all except quarter ones.
Quarters... No, probably just lower sections ( patches )
Passenger compartiment floor... same.
Trunk floor and extensions... same except center floor on 74, they have a hump to the gas separator humped Gas tank.
Interior: Everything except upper and sail panels. 73/74 rear lower panels aren't padded arm rests, just same molded plastic. 74 rear lowers are differnt because the 74 shoulder belt retractor is hidden by this panel and has a special separate piece hump to that. Inner body frame on that area is also different on 74 for that reason ( to bolt the shoulder retractor belt )
Electrical... allmost the same except 74 ( totally diff ) because it has the interlock seatbelt system that won't let you start the engine without fasten the seatbelt. However 71 to 73 have some diferences too being the main one once again the 72/73 seatbelt warning system what on 71 was simply a time delay light. 72/73s got sensors ons eats and retractors to give you the warning signal.
Bumpers; interchangeable with proper brackets. 73/74 are extended to bumper fillers. 71/72 front ones with charger arrow on center. Since 72, front bumpers have slots to bumper jacks.. rear bumpers only 72 slotted, 73/74 has a little cut on inner lip to use the same "nail" kind bumper jack. Guards, probably interchangeable with the right braces.
Body: there is, where the bigger difference is, is beside the quarter opening window, tail lights and grilles. 71/72 body line, discontinued, 73/74 continued and lower on rear.
Tail lights; are interchangeable even different variety. On a 71 r/t or 500, the tail light bezels were painted primarily argent gray/silver (they might have had some minor black trimming). On a 72 rallye they were painted solid black. I prefer the black look and its easier for a do it yourselfer to finish nicely. To do them 71 style, you`d have to invest some bucks in the "correct" paints.
Grilles, same as above, with Hideaways exceptions, because would need the right brackets to those. 71 and 72 hideaways are slightly different. 72 with more vertical lines just on pattern.
Valences: both match perfectly, but front on 71/72 has shorter braces to frame, easy to addapt anyway. Rear, only bumper guards cut outs are differnt, but fit perfectly. Will fit perfect, the problem is if they have the bumper guards braces cut outs, because 73/74 are bigger than earliers... exhaust cutouts arte the same.
Front K member and suspension... Totally different, no one part interchangeable.
There are a lot more differences, because 3rd gens are the more variety on packages options ( SE, Rallye, R/T, Coupe, Hardtop, Superbee, 500 ), so, all also depends of what options has the car that you have. But basically those are the differences.
Moldings and chrome parts; are the same except Wheel opening moldings and of course quarter window moldings doors top moldings... for some time I have thought they where interchangeable and I have known that people has interchanged, but maybe was bending them a little, since whell openings are cut higher ( around 1 1/2 " ).... all these beside that they are different stile... 71/72 are "plain" and 73/74 are with a "line".
Mirrors; 73/74 mirrors have the holes to screws wider than 71/72, so the pedestal is slightly different, BUT, if you open the holes on the right place on doors and use the 73/74 backing plate you can use them and will look practically the same. (unoticeable)
Under hood bottles; Washer bottles different every year.
R/T & Rallye Charger Differences
Thanks to our Friend Nacho!
A 72 Rallye package is basically the same as the R/T Package on 71 with engine performance exception. Now you can get a Rallye with a 318 as standard equippment.
Since engine was not anymore part of the Rallye-R/T package, then size of front sway bar and T bars weren't anymore part of package and all depends of engine choose
on 73 things changed just a little bit since you didn't have more louvered tail lights and doors gills, however the rest of package was the same. Decals were different but still had that looks option included on package, including deck lid and black out hood as separated options from the mid body sides ones.
Of course on 71 R/T you had front disc and 11" rear drums brakes on packaged, that didn't need to get included on later rallyes packages because since 73 that brake setup was standard on all models.
This is the 73 Rallye package, but is basically the same as 72 with differences stated above.
As stated below, chrome exhaust tips were a separated option same as the rear exhauts cut outs valance, However, the cut outs valance and chrome tips were part of package on 340s and 440s Rallyes. Optional on 318s and 400s
Rallye Package: Bulge hood, hood tie-down pins, black or red "gradated" body stripe, front and rear sway bars, F70X40 raised white letter tires, Rallye instrument panel (hooded, circular gauges with raised white letters, including a speedo, ammeter, oil, temp, and fuel.) 318V8 standard rallye engine. 340 4 barrel and 440 4 barrel V8 with bright tip duals at extra cost on the rallye. 340 was only available with the rallye.
There were more Rallye color decals optioned than stated, Gold and Copper Gradatted stripes and I think also solid Red. I saw once on a Mopar dealer here a solid red with black outer edges, non gradated or reflective. THATS' OF COURSE 73 AND 74. Not sure about white, however a buddys mine has a Red 73 allmost since new ( bought used on 75 ) and his father took a pic of his car with white rallye stripe on 77, so probably was original.
340 was last on 73 and 360 came out to production on 74 instead.
Concelead headlamps ( hideaways ) were only part of package on SEs, and optional on the rest including base models ( thats on both 71 and 72 ). No more hideways on laters.
