Have a few stories saved up from the last few weeks.
Yesterday, I worked on a 2004? Nissan Titan, diagnosing a no start condition. I was able to figure out that that the ECM relay was defective. I swapped it out with the vehicles fog light relay...and it fired right up. When we called the Nissan dealer to purchase a relay...we were told that the relay was not sold individually, that the whole IPDM (power distribution module) had to be replaced AND that procedure required a re-flash of the vehicles PCM. The cost of the module was somewhat reasonable....around $200. But still a ridiculous amount of $$ to replace a single defective relay. I still do not understand why the PCM needs to be re-flashed. After all its simply a box with 30+ fuses, wires, and 10 relays. No "logic modules" or anything complex.
A few weeks ago....worked on a Caravan with a leaking P/S cooler. Part is $500 AND on national back order. C'mon a simple bitty cooler...for $500! I went ahead and put a $47 aftermarket piece on it, which required a little modification.
P/T Cruiser. Put 2 p/s pumps on one.....both are very noisy.
Did a little internet search that reveals the reservoirs on these crap boxes have a filter/screen in them that sludges up and restricts fluid to the pump. I take off the reservoir and clean it as best as I can, knowing the customer does not have the $$ for a new reservoir. Still noisy.
A little further internet investigation reveals that the crap boxes require a special tool to get all the air out of the P/S system. Basically, a hand held vac pump is connected to the reservoir via the special adapter.
I tell my boss that if he can get me a p/s cap, that I will try to modify it and pull a vacuum on the reservoir. Cost of cap?? $70!
My idea does not work....seems like that cap seal is vented.
In the future....my requirements to do another pump on one of these crap boxes...is , a dealer pump, a new reservoir, and the proper bleeding adapter. (available online for $15)
