Cory great plans.......
However just one word of advise........
Check with your Insurance company, I know that here in Canada Garages that are attached to the house are either not allowed for welding, painting if its set up as a shop....if there was ever a fire and you had never volunteered that information they may very well not cover your claim...
Here in Canada, if you do volunteer that info they may elect to inspect your garage for fire proofing, ventilation and fire prevention such as fire extinguishers etc....and this is for a garage NOT attached to the main home...
Now it may be very different where you live, but look into it....
They did inspect my last detatched shop and had me designate a welding area and cover the walls with fire proof...not fire resistant coverings....we used sheet metal right to the floor and caulked it.......

All great advice Greengo. lucky for me, I live in South Dakota and according to building codes and permit issuers, none of those things will be an issue. There are some strict wiring guidelines and fire safety steps (have extinguisher, firewall between house and garage, ect, that need to be followed for insurance reasons, but use of the garage is pretty much up to the owner. actually, I know of at least two small welding/fabrication shops locally here that operate out of an attached shop. Painting is another matter, while there are no restrictions against it, I know from experience that painting in an attached garage causes some major wife issues. this I hope to resolve by using the back half of the shop for painting and sealing off the two sides before doing so. I also have a 9x7 overhead on the back side that opens to the back yard and that area can always be turned into a temp paint booth if the weather is fair. Lots of things to think about before setting up the inside of the shop. one poorly planed area can cramp the whole works.

I keep forgetting to respond to the thread. Actually, I think this is the third time I started to respond. This is so cool! I really wish I had a decent place to work on my cars. A few years ago my property was rezoned from residential to residential/ light commercial. At the time I had plans to build a fairly sizable garage...but put those plans on hold. My thought process was that sooner or later ( hopefully sooner) a commercial developer would be knocking on my door wanting to buy my house....and that the money spent on the garage would add no value. Of course...the economy fell in the toilet and commercial development is at a virtual standstill. Eck, I really hope this will influence you to restore rather than part out the 71 500. Since I am guilty of having parted a few cars that should not have met that fate....I wont throw rocks in glass houses.... But a BB 71 500 seems like a good car to restore if possible.

I couldn't agree more Tom ;D I REALLY don't want to chop this car up. It has issues without a doubt but it is complete with no missing parts and more than solid enough to save if money and ambition were not an issue. Maybe now that I have some room being made, I can stick it in a corner somewhere and see which of my two older kids has the ambition to take it on. ;D Better yet, if they help restore both of them, I can let them have the small block car. If I were not two years into my current restoration and had to pick right now, I would MUCH rather have the 71 500 BB car and I wouldn't give a second thought to save it or part it.

We removed all the shelving and insulation from the back wall of the garage last week so they could get ready to tear it out. Then We had the AC Unit moved from behind the garage and took some quick before pics... Then Yesterday, they came by and dug out the trenches for the foundation.. It sure doesn't look like much at this stage, but progress is progress. Today, they are here poring footings. I hope they keep up this pace! If so, they will be done in no time. ;D

We're are now in the same situation at our place. I just got a 3rd gen to sister our first gen and now my wife has the fever ... she wants to buy this cute little 85 Lebaron convertable. So we decided to do a 3 car detached garage in our back yard. We'll put another door on the back of the current attached garage and drive 'em thru!
