In order to install 71/72 front bumper mounting brackets on my 74 to rid myself of those ugly fillers, how many of the brackets have to be change? The main 2 brackets and the 2 top shorties?

rears are the only interchangeable and the MUST CHANGE stuff to save the filler gap... front you can keep your actually ones just enlarging the frame rail brackets. top ones would fit since already have enlarged holes on fender.

Ok...elongate the holes in the brackets that attach to the frame and slide the bumper back and tighten. The top 2 brackets may or may not fit. Am I ok now?
Thanks all.

I don't think will be a great problem... Matt shoud know it he already did. Didn't you even try to mount Matt ? but I don't think will be a great problem, those bumper will just sit more inside the bumper. If some problem then just cut them a little bit or get 71/72 ones. Top brackets allmots sure wont have any problem either. There is room anyway to play with it.

What do you have to do to tuck in the rear bumper? I was told when I got the car , and it came with an extra set of both front and rear bracket, that the extra brackets were off of a 71/72, I have a '73. I tooke the back bumper brackets off the car and they are exactly like the extra ones. Are the 71/72's that close to the 73's that you cannot tell by compare?

71/72 brackets are not as deep as the 73/74. Thats why the bumper sits in closer. There is a noticeable difference in sizes.

Actually I dont know exactly how things are going to line up for me yet. I have NOT slotted my bumper brackets but I removed the filler and those rubber pads. Im using a 73 bumper, 73 brackets, and 73 top brackets. I havent finished the job because my fenders need work and I want to make sure I get the spacing right. Heres a pic of the gap I have left so far. The top of this fender is screwed up and full of putty though, so dont use the top gap as a reference. If I understand what everyone is saying in this thread correctly, just slot the current 73 brackets to get the current 73 bumper back to where you want it. As far as I can tell - 71 -74 bumpers are the same cept 71 had no jack slots & 73-4 did away with the inset arrow on the center section. Sure, I'm curious about bracket & frame mounting changes. Not knowing what those changes are might be a bigger can of worms & expense than necessary. Looking forward to your progress/findings!
