Yes, they are different. As you might guess, the 71-72 neck is a little shorter.

Tom suggested a cutting torch and remove a little metal. I'm headed out now and trying it. I will let you know how it turns out.

I guess there is another solution that probably would work and with less and custom job... weld the bracket a little bit higher and insert deeper on tank the neck.. maybe

I guess I spoke too fast. All the extra filler necks that I have are 73-74. Looks like I must have sold the extra 71-72 necks I had.
