Hi all. I have a 1971 R/T hood that has a perfect skin but the frame is rusted out. I am considering buying a flat hood with a good frame and putting the R/T skin on it. Does anyone know if the frames are the same? Has anyone ever tried this before? Thanks for the help.

Just went through this. I had a 71 rt hood, 72 hood and 74 hood side by side. All were the same underneath except 71 rt had part of it cut out. Considered doing the same thing myself but skin needed repair also so I bought another hood. Just as a tip, with the number of spot welds it has , I would consider cutting the rt framework out and grinding the remainder from the flanges instead of drilling the spot welds. This will give you a full flange instead of swiss cheese then you can have somebody with a spot welder put it together for a nice clean piece. The flange that is next to the windshield is going to be a bear but it looks doable. Hope you can do this yourself because the hours for someone else to do it are going to be pretty high.

I had a hood like that too. Good old Pennsylvania junk. I just bought a good one for myself and gave the rotted one to a friend with good bodywork skills. ( I kept the insert) I figured while he might do it for me, for pay....the labor hours would be high.

Thanks for the reply. What part was cut out of the R/T hood are you referring to- the hole in the skin or a difference in the frame? I am having a body man do my paint and sheet metal- I will pass on your great suggestion. Does anyone have any good pics of the underside of a flat hood versus a R/T hood?

Well, here's the world as I see it....which is NOT to say that I am correct. Flat hood. Any hood with a bulge...any year, with or without Ramcharger mechanism, since we are talking bracing underneath. The flat hood again. It's easy to spot that the cross-car braces are gone in the bulge hood. What's not quite as obvious is that the two, long, front-to-back braces are actually cut in half length-wise on the bulge hoods. This creates additional space side-to-side. Can you see it? Take a cut-off wheel, run it down those yellow lines, and dispose of the inner half of the braces those yellow lines are on. Don't know if this helps or not...

Yes that helps! Thank you. I notice that you have a picture of the Ram Air hood. I am working on a bulge hood with an insert (Super Bee insert in my case). Is the frame the same on the Ram Air hood and the Bulge with Insert hood? Sorry for all the questions- just want to be straight on what I'm undertaking.

I don't know 100% for sure. I "believe" the frame is the same from bulge to Ramcharger. I've never owned an "insert" hood, so I just can't say for sure. But I would certainly expect that they are.

Thanks for the help. Can anyone post a pic of the frame on a bulge "insert" hood? (I'm in Ca right now and my R/T hood is at home (Ks)).

I might be able to get a picture of mine. The opening for the air grabber is not the same as the opening for the inserts, but the louvers can be swapped for the superbee insert; they are the same size.

That would be much appreciated! Actually my hood is a 1971 R/T hood, and you're right- the inserts are the same size.
