I've got this 1411 edlebrock carb on my 440 and I have worked and worked on it and it still runs rich and idles rich. My plugs get fouled quick and I have backfires and bogs etc., the only thing I have not done is buy a metering rod set ( 60$ worth ) for it and try them all out. I'm really tired of fooling with it and wondering if a new carb is in order. I know all you guys have probably felt my pain at some time or other so where do I go from here? I like the the simplicity of the 1411 but simple ain't gettin me anywhere.

I've been thinking about jet size in my carb and maybe someone knows some info on what I have. 410 is stamped on primary jet and 7547 on metering rod; is that a bad combination?

Have you installed a fuel pressure regulator yet?

What does it have in the way of floats? If they are brass, can you hear gas in them when you shake them? If foam, they should weight next to nothing in your hand.

Regulator is installed and set at 5.5 psi., floats are brass and do not leak. Vacuum gauge reads 16-17 at idle and 21 around 18-2000 rpm. I'm not sure what idle vacuum should be. I have heard good things about Demond carbs and am looking into that possibility if I can't get this one going.

At idle (throttle plates closed) you should have maximum vacuum, typically 18-20 As the throttle plates are opened, manifold vacuum should decrease.

As far as the plug fouling, are they black and sooty...or do they foul with deposits across the gap?

I just came in from messing with it and found I did not have enough advance timing. Once I increased it vacuum came up to 19-20 and I get more vacuum with increase of rpm. This may be my problem of running rich but I'm not holding my breath. It has been sooting plugs all over the end and pipes as well. I'm going to drive it to church tonight and see how it runs.
