I remember that plug now. A friends 73 RR had that and it bugged the crap out of me. You couldn't help looking at it everytime you looked at the tach. Looks like a person could put a dab of hot melt glue in the hole and it would look the same.

Still doesn't make sense to me. All the gauges are the same except that one. The "glass" mask with hole is used for the clock, with out used for the tach. There has to be another reason. as mentioned, the tach mask would requiere an extra mask made with a lense on tach location without the hole, but still on the assembly with the gauge lettering on it. Is simpliest make just one mask for both and plug the hole if not required, than add a third line of product... more to the assembly line, and more to the parts catalog, More stock of parts required on parts shops.

I remember that plug now. A friends 73 RR had that and it bugged the dark matter out of me. You couldn't help looking at it everytime you looked at the tach. Looks like a person could put a dab of hot melt glue in the hole and it would look the same. As I'm not worried about the 7200 rpm + end of the tach, I think I'd be tempted to buy a Dodge realted hat pin of my liking, break the pin off the back, and glue it over the hole. link

Actually, they're not. The speedo is the only one that is the same. Here's a close up of the 2985185 mask. Large oil/fuel combo gauge to the left and the two smaller alt and temp gauges. Here's the 2985234 mask. The left side now has either a clock or the tach; the two smaller pods are now both combo gauges, first the oil/fuel then the alt/temp. The alt and temp are actually separate gauges so, technically, there are two half-moon shaped gauges in the right most pod. Note the mask actually has the gauge lettering silk screened or printed on the center 'hub'. The two masks cannot be interchanged without swapping all gauges except the speedo.

I still have to respectfully disagree with you. I know what the gauges look like but they are all separate. The top configuration the gauges are one with the blank plate. With a clock or tach there are 4 (four) separate gauges. Part numbers as follows: Ammeter = 2985221, Temp = 2985223, Fuel = 2985214, Oil = 3746166. They can ALL be ordered separately, I know, I have. They fit in the same "hole" so to speak. In other words if you want to put in a tach, you could take out the Oil/Gas and the other two gauges, replace the Oil/Gas with the tach, order the other 4 gauges, replace the single ones with the other 4 and done! I know, I did it on my first 73.

I have both clusters sitting here in my garage. The standard rallye cluster has four gauges, the tach/clock version has five gauges; the part numbers: Rallye Cluster w/Radio w/150 mile speedometer (1971-1972) Housing | Speedo | Clock | Tach | Oil/Fuel | Alt. | Temp. | Mask | Bezel | |
---|
2985833 | 2985895 | | | 2985211 | 2985219 | 2985217 | 2985185 | 2985158 | w/o tach or clock | 2985834 | 2985895 | 2985226 | 2985170 | 2985214 | 2985221* | 2985223* | 2985234 | 2985158 | w/tach or clock |
* - Half-moon gauges that fit together in one small mask opening. For 1973, the bezel was superceded by part number 3592686. I suspect this is the one with the two added indicators to the right of the wiper and headlamp switch. All other numbers are the same in the parts manuals. The oil and fuel are a single gauge in both clusters, 2985211 on the left, 2985214 on the right: In addition to the different masks, the housings are different: Without cutting and drilling the housing, you can only directly swap the speedo because a) the large opening required for the clock or tach and b) the bosses are there for both sets of gauges, except the non-tach housing doesn't have the holes drilled for the combo gauges. Unlike the other gauges, the tach and clock are mounted from the back side. I cannot find any reference to a part 3746166 in any of the 1971-1974 parts manuals and some web searches didn't turn up anything on it either.

when he said about same clusters and mask, I guess he was talking about the tach and clock assemblies, never including the non clock/tach one, so didn't run to show the differences like you did ( but I was to do it )
so, nothing more to add... the basic one is waaaaaay diff than the clock/tach one and the only same piece ( aside the top speed and blue high beams lense ) is the speedo, as shown on pics.
